I was chatting with a buddy of mine (who admittedly played football for Kirk Ferentz at Iowa) and he convinced me that Kirk Ferentz is a good coach - he is just dealing with Iowa resources and prestige.
I lived in Iowa for a couple of years. They have an 80,000 seat stadium that is on campus and full for every game, reasonable striking distance to the Chicago and St. Louis suburbs, good academis, nice college town/sloots - in the shitty half of the B1G - Iowa is a place where a coach with a pulse could kick some ass. Ferentz sucks and should be put to sleep.

Like State College, 3 hours to NYC, PIttsburgh and Philly, stadium is full every Saturday including the spring game

agree to an extent
It's not a big state. Iowa State is competition, albeit really weak competition. Still there are a lot of schools in small states who have done well (N, K St at times, Arkie at times, Oklahomo, Clumpson).
I think you could say the same thing about Illinois or even Minnesota.
Illinois is in a big state (13,000,000 or so) and their main competition is a nerd school which filters out a lot of players. I don't follow Midwest TBS but Chicago has 9,000,000 people...they have to have a decent amount of football talent. A slick recruiter could siphon much of that off from ND, Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin etc.
Iowa has plenty of resources - it's an attractive school in about as nice a location as the Midwest has to offer (really, the only great locations in the B1G are Wisconsin (Madison is a really neat town) and Northwestern (Evanston, on the lake). They own the state of Iowa, fan-dom-wise - nobody who didn't go there gives a fuck about Iowa State. Which is in itself weird since Ames is pretty much in the northern suburbs of Des Moines.
I just don't buy any "poor Iowa" bullshit. Hayden Fry built a pretty nice program there, and Ferentz has been stealing money for years.

Illinois should be a basketball power every fucking year. Chicago to the north, St Louis to the east. They've pretty much sucked since Kendall Gill was there.

"Some of my friends in the desert were cheering those last two touchdowns."
Over 56.5 just hit. After watching the game, I think that may have been Brent's play all along, and not Stanford -6.
Irregardless , lots of bruthas.
