Lost in all of the lynching of Babushka and Pete (mostly deserved) is the unbelievable work of the defensive coaches. The player development and teaching has been outstanding. There is some talent, but not nearly enough talent to be #1 in defense in the conference.

When I see a guy like Gaines play, it gives me a little hope when it comes to the coaches recruiting evaluations and not chasing stars. Gaines was lightly recruited, and after watching him play I cant for the life of me figure out why.
I forget who it was here who said that Gaines was good enough to play last season but that we could afford to RS him because we had Qualls backing up Shelton.
What happened to @chuckhv? He was the one who said he really liked Gaines film coming out of high school.
Gaines was an average to above average 3* recruit yet his offers wouldn't have told you so. Another "steal" for Petersen. Just a good fucking recruit who became a great college player. Those are the types we need to find.
Not to lay a big turd on this thread, but I believe wholeheartedly that we should bring at least 3 DLs in every recruiting class. Considering the up-tempo offenses we face, depth and rotation are critical.
So far this year we only have a verbal "commitment" from amandre williams (a DE), who seems all but decommitted at this point.

Don't forget Myles Rice. Also, I don't think Amandre is going anywhere. We'll probably take 2 DE's and 1 DT this year.

I brought that up. Like I said kids high school film is crazy good! He was one point from a 4 star, scored 94 at SPARQ and played running back in HS where he hammered the ball but had some long runs on his films just crushing opposing D. On Arizona 3rd and 9 he took on 3 O lineman and never moved an inch RB with no where to go was picked off by a free player courtesy of him eating up the whole damn O line. He is held every play and drew the only 2 holding calls in the game IIRC. They almost never move this guy.

Answer: Connor O'Brien.
I have no idea how good O'Brien is or will become, but there are some encouraging signs of depth.
Coaching matters.
And fucking JoJo was laying the wood and talking shit all game.
Him drawing a double team for the next 2 or 3 years is going to make a lot of linebackers very happy.
