OT: Romar adds big man (allegedly)

dncdnc Member Posts: 56,812
Apparently Jeff Goodman works for ESPN now, and he's reporting that former 4 star center Robert Upshaw is leaving Fresneck (LOL!) for UW.

Of course, the last time a 4 star big man was reported as transferring to UW, he ended up at iHateOregon, so LIPOAA.

Good get if it is true. He didn't have a great freshman season at Fresno State, but it wasn't horrible. It's about time we got a decent big guy.

Romar finally has a stable of bigs. Now whether they are any good or not remains to be seen.

For awhile it felt like we had Aziz and the rest of the team was filled with 6'2-6'6 wings.

While the wings weren't great, I think the real problems were at PG and the 4. Suggs looked a lot better when he had IT. When he tried to do more than be a spot up shooter, he wasn't good. To a lesser extent, the same is true for Wilcox.

Jarreau has some potential, but the 4 spot was brutal for UW last year. Not having anyone who was a reliable scorer down low hurt as well. The team just wasn't very good last year. Andrews was okay for a freshman, but he wasn't nearly as good as Beach led everyone to believe. His numbers were pretty bad.

Disagree about Suggs, he was always terrible. I was pissed when Turner transferred while Suggs stayed put. I think you're overrating IT's contributions quite a bit, at least when it comes to how he helped the wings. Terrence Ross was significantly better after IT left. Not because IT left, just because he developed and had real talent, whereas Suggs never developed the little talent he had.

Agreed the 4 spot is the biggest issue, but I'm sure Desmond Simmons will finally show us why he's a Spado First Rounder any season now.

This season will rise and fall on how good NWG really is and whether Andrews is Jordan Polk or Jaydon Mickens.

Seems like we will have enough actual bigs to where we can stick JJ in at the 3 and can be a huge mismatch. He can guard the 3 or the 4 too with how tall he is and that wingspan.

I am hoping he turns into a taller Justin Holiday type of player.

I think Romar's team is looking better but it is much different now that we have to compete with Kentucky West. Oregon should be one of the better teams again. UCLA obviously doesn't care about bball anymore with their hire.

Romar is really banking on NWG being as advertised. He relies on floor generals for him to win anything. Until he can crack a elite 8 (which I don't see happening soon) he is just the Tedford of UW bball.

I think he's a cross between Tedford and Lambright.

Race miscalculated chris Petersen's ineptitude, the season doesn't end until Arizona, follow the new script.

Actually, there are 5 reasons why the season ends Saturday.

The difference is Ross had the talent to do so, which you stated in your post. With IT, MBA, and Holiday gone, he became the #1 option. Suggs was much better (especially efficiency wise) with IT than without. He wasn't terrible, he was a role player who can do one thing which is shoot. When he tried to expand his game, he wasn't even a very good spot up shooter anymore.

I like Andrews, but he was pretty bad last year. He shot 30 something percent and wasn't a great creator either. As maddening as Gaddy was, he was better than Andrews last year.

I agree about NWG. I am excited about him, but am going to LIPO.

I think Andrews has a much better career than Gaddy. Gaddy was a better player last year, though.

Take it to the basketball recruiting bored.
  • IT really helped MBA with the pick and rolls. Before IT became a great passer, MBA was basically useless.

I think NGW is the real deal at PG and Romar does have a ton of bigs now including a proven big transfer from SF. The Huskies will be on bubble for the NCAA tournament this year.

Wilcox will benefit a lot more from a real PG. Plus the addition by subtraction of Gaddy should help too.
