One Game at a Time Myopicity

Just got back on-line after a swell trip to the coast that started with...... what can I say other than a great day for Tailgater's crew at the opening of New Husky Stadium. Perfect day for a long tailgate party with all the family and good friends including many from past tailgates,..... plus some classmates from my BJC-to-UW days who managed to find us. But none of such pregame nonsense nor the opening of a new stadium could come close to the pleasure if not shock-and-awe of watching a rarity of UW gridiron fun..... the specter of Huskies playing Husky Football for a solid 60 minutes of clock. Forget about the celebrity of the visitors as college football's favorite mid-level underdogs. It was the Huskies we came to see and for I believe the first time in ten years, UW footballers were worth more than the price of admission.

As for Husky Stadium, it's all new inside and out and only the view of Lake Washington remains the same. I suppose the north upper deck hasn't changed, but it was built twice and doesn't that make it always new,... that is if anybody cares? As expected, my Tyee seats in the 100 level seemed to be exactly the same in terms of distance from the action and viewing the game. Removing the track did put a few fans closer to the field, but it didn't fuckup our seats in row 32. the nearly 71,000 capacity crowd appeared to be as excited and lively as ever, especially in the first half. However at least for this first game of 2013, Husky Stadium didn't seem to be nearly as loud as it once was so many years ago. Perhaps that was due to the large blotches of orange scattered around the upper decks and east end, but it could also be a result of the open concourses for 100 level Husky Heritage and UW student sections and the open-space separation between the two new 300 level decks on the south side. Sound waves as energy will travel the path of least resistance and there may be enough openings to outside to make Husky Stadium a less noisy place for visitors on the field.

Back to the myopic focus of One Game at a Time. Beating up on BSU finally was for me far less impressive than the way the Huskies on both sides of the ball played both aggressively, like they knew what they were doing most of the time, as well as nearly error free. The new position coaching could be paying off, not just with the defense, but also the short passing game. Unless I'm mistaken, both the WR's and QB's have new coaches and that appeared to make a significant difference. We must hope that Husky Football can get better and it will have to. BSU at home is in the past and as I kind of expected, Illinois on the road looks like a tougher test. The Huskies could be thankful on Saturday for the neutral field in Chicago and it's still a road game where wins have been difficult for Sark to come by. In any case, it should be a good warm-up for........ One Game at a time.
