I found that curious as well but can see the reasoning:
1. You need a TD no matter what.
2. But find yourself down by 6 and backed up in your own end-zone.
3. If you are punting from deep in the end-zone, what will be yard-line at which the opposing team starts their drive? If they don't have a return, I'd guess a fair catch would happen at the their own 40.
4. ASU would then need only two first downs to get into FG range, which would essentially end the game (ahead by 9).
5. Taking the safety makes it so even a TD and two point conversion doesn't lead to the win but puts the opposing offense back to their own 35 yard line.
6. UCLA's D sucked when back on the field so it was all moot anyway lolz.
