Smith is a fucking moron, but we lost that game on this play. How bad is it that Mickens busted this outside? Holy shit.

he has the ball in his hands and a free 7 yards....

Edit: an Oregon WR makes the safety (not even in the screen) miss and scores on this play 9 out of 10 times. Difference between being a decent team and whatever the fuck we are.

There was only one guy that could make the tackle on that play if he goes up field right away, the safety that is back pedaling at the snap. It's likely at least an 8 yard gain, maybe a 1st down. FML FML FML FML

In addition to the misread, the holding penalty put us out of field goal range.

That's what I saw too. Mickens also looked like he should have scored on that fumblerooski. It was blocked up well.

McGrew will house those plays next year.

Nice block by #82. He really gave it his all. Not that it mattered with FSMickens.

Yes, the blocking was pretty good all round on the play.

pretty sure he heard lenius telling mickens to quit being a bitch, and knew the sideline would tackle mickens way before 51 ever got a hand on him

In Mickens defence, his own blocker gets pushed into him as soon as he catches the ball. Mickens then reacted like any other small speedster would, "I'm fast so I'll just go outside and outrun them."

The blocker is at fault here. When you are twice the size of the person you are blocking, there is no reason to be pushed back into Mickens. Oregon runs this screen better than anybody because the blockers hold of course (hardy har har) and they attack the defensive back, rather than catching them. As you can see, the blocker doesn't even take one step toward the defender. Kind of hard to get space in that situation. The defensive back wins the battle by getting penetration, taking away Micken's space as he's forced to first take a step back, thus delaying his forward progress and giving much needed to time for support to arrive.

That is also true. Lenius was too high there. However, you'll see that Mickens has his head down too.

Yes, but I don't think it matters in this situation. Mickens would still have to take a step back before cutting inside. By that time, he'd still have to avoid two linebackers and a safety. If blocked properly, Mickens would only have a safety to beat, and yes going outside in that sitation would be stupid since that would bring in an additional defender (the sideline). But by going outside in this situation the defensive back was able to make contact with Mickens and slowing him up even more. It still doesn't excuse the fact that Lenius got completely destroyed on that play. Lenius was knocked back two and half yards behind the line of scrimmage. There's an argument to be made that Lenius' poor blocking caused Mickens to panic.

Decent blocks by Perkins and Lineus, and all that is between Mickens and a TD is a safety 10 yards down the field. And it was clearly an audible by Browning. Great call, horrible execution.
