After CP was talking him up at the kick ass presser, I went back and watched some of him last year.
Oh man... he just doesn't have instincts for the position. If they use him correctly, he'll hit some home runs, but can he be a guy who is consistently getting 3-5 yards on a carry?
Nothing I saw says that. What I saw says, "if there's not a huge hole, I will go in random directions until I hit one of my own linemen. If there is a huge hole, I'll miss it and run into the back of my linemen or rip off a 60 yard run with equal probability."

It could be a rough couple years for Dennis. Just think that he could be staring down the barrel at boyfriends Washington and Browning in the backfield!

Dennis is right. DWarsh sucks until he stops sucking. Running fast through a couple of huge holes last season doesn't mean he quit sucking. We all knew he was fast in the open field. He cost UW a ton of first downs because he has no instincts, no elusiveness, and no concept of the need for or the means by which to get tough yards at the end of runs.
I like the guy as a rotational back and like his physical potential. I'm just in the camp that says he is a pretty shitty running back at this time. I have as much faith that Gaskin will be consistently good as I do in Washington.
Similar styles but he's a better version of Rankin. DWarsh's soph year > Rankin's junior year. If that means his junior year > Rankin's senior year we'll have a pretty damn good back this season.

Washington had some runs wher he showed some real power. I think the problem was two fold. He has shitty vision and he is aware of it and sometimes ran hesitant like he was thinking too much.
He needs to be able to do it all at RB, but I also think he can be used more effectively.

DW shows real power occasionally, but more often shows that he's unwilling or unable to know when to use it. He danced sideways at the end of too many runs when he needed to go straight ahead for 2-3 more yards. Maybe if someone can get him to understand he's a big back with speed, not a quick back (Rankin was quick, Sankey was very quick, even Chris Polk had a little quickness), he'll turn it on. It's not too late, but so far he has sucked in my opinion.
Rankin was very good his senior year, 1294 yards at 5.6 yards per carry. He averaged 4.7 both his soph and jr years. He wasn't too much of a natural back so maybe that gives us some hope that DW can improve.
The key for DW will be what Pete said...can he break a tackle or two and get 3 yards on a 3rd and 2? Can he get 4-5 yards on a 2nd and long to make it 3rd and short? That is where Coleman is better.
If DW can do those things then he could have a 1300 yard season. He had 700 last year and judging from his improvement in the second half of the year its safe to assume he'll do 900-1000 if he gets the carries. I think DW has another leap but it took Rankin two years to make that leap. Question is will DW make that next leap this season or next?

Anyway, he sucked against Arizona really bad.
Even if you take that run away he still averaged 4.6 ypc.
