A booster told me he once dropped by to see Gilby in his office during the 1-10 season. All the light were off, and the booster asked him if he should turn them on. But Gilby motioned for him to sit down and told him to keep the lights off.

Should have made the guy an interim coach and hired someone after 2003. It was a lazy fucking move to make him the HC, knowing he wouldn't last long.

The part where Gilby can go die in a fucking fire was accepting the job in the first place. The fat lazy ass would go on the radio in years after his reign of fatness and say shit like, "I didn't ask for this. The job was thrown at me." Well then why'd you take the job you pizza-loving tub of goo?

I thought after the Lambo debacle that Babs wouldn't make the same mistake twice and hire an in-house fucktarded coordinator on short notice like she did in August of '93. I thought she'd name Gilby interim head coach and hire a REAL head coach in December.

Of course, that means I'm assuming Babs didn't have her head up her stinking twat, which she obviously did for the better part of 13 years.

I mean for fucks sake. We must have the DUMBEST people in America running that shitshow of an athletic department up there. Fuck.
The shit-tastic decisions that have been made over the past 20 years showed that no one learned a fucking thing.

You promote an assistant, then hire a guy who was basically Sark Sr, then promote an assistant again who already failed miserably as a HC, then you hire a guy who was just fired, then you hire a guy with zero experience and weak experience as a coordinator. Just fucking unreal. Could have had a monkey throw darts at a wall of names and it would have ended up better. Petersen falling into our lap was Karma. I remember going to bed the night before thinking if they don't hire Petersen I am totally fucking done.

But back to Gilby. A sharp AD could have hired Urban Meyer after 2003. Remember he met with Turner after 2004 and said the guy was weird.
I had the exact same experience. We all knew Woodward was in Boise (because some loser stalked his private plane, what a freak that guy was) and then that Boise booster guy said that Petersen at the end of the meeting had decided to stay. I was so devastated, went to bed expecting to wake up to Nussmeier as our coach, lucky I didn't drink bleach that night.
Wooderson would tell you that it'd be a lot cooler if you did

Waking up to the Petersen hiring was one of the greatest joys. What a tumultuous time. From the elation of Sark being gone to utter despair that our FS AD was going to hire Nuss, to Petersen falling into our laps and the jubilation that went into it. If that original Petersen hired thread isn't in the HoF, it should be.

Ken Gilbertson — whoever he may be — would've been a much better hire than the guy who'd just been shit-canned at Cal.

To be fair, Gilby was a great assistant and coordinator and 2004 overshadows that and ruined his legacy. I blame the UW AD and admin for that.

Hey look -- here's a quote from The Football President:

"Todd and I started talking to people all around the country. We talked to many, many people, dozens of people. We had an opportunity to chat with lots of great coaches, lots of good people. We had the chance to go around the country and sit down with a number of really fine folks. And again, and again we kept returning to one name and was the name of Tyrone Willingham. When Tyrone became available a few weeks ago, we were absolutely stunned and elated. Because we knew we had a chance to bring the University of Washington, someone who exemplified all of those characteristics we were looking for. Someone of extraordinary character, someone of integrity, a great winning tradition, someone who understood the discipline and toughness that has always been the hallmark of the University of Washington. So for me, this was a very, very easy choice. When we sat down and talked with Tyrone, it couldn't have been clearer in my mind that this was the man that we wanted to lead the University of Washington back to its former glory days. I'm absolutely delighted that Coach Willingham is with us, we couldn't be more lucky. We are proud to have you with us Tyrone, thank you so much for willing to be our football coach."
