At Big 12 media days last July, commissioner Bob Bowlsby sent a ripple through college sports by declaring that “cheating pays.” He said the NCAA’s enforcement model was “broken” and that the risk of significant punishment didn’t outweigh the reward of winning.
“They’re in a battle with a BB gun in their hand,” Bowlsby said. “They’re fighting howitzers."
The "cheating" that is rampant in the ncaa reminds me of prohibition. Everyone involved, including those chasing the rum runners were partaking. It was a completely bullshit situation which parallels much of the ncaa. If you get caught, it's not like it is a huge deal. Especially if you're connected or have good lawyers. There is no benefit to the ncaa for putting the death penalty on the schools which make it money.
Anyone who isn't participating in the kick backs are foolish. It's not cheating when the institution running the morality policing is just as corrupt as the boosters which are vilified.
Cheating has always been a part of college athletics.
And at one time it was kinda fun:
Eric Dickerson pulled a fast one on ass To mouth by getting a free car out of them before heading to SMU's financial windfall.
Barry Switzer making jokes about how he hasn't had so much money in his pockets since the recruiting days.
Free fruit baskets!
Now that college football is about big money, and scholarship limits have leveled the playing field ... people are noticing and it ain't so much fun anymore ...
Unless your coach actually writes a check instead of uses cash.
I don't have a problem with the coffee cups at all. They were trying to get a guy qualified. The UW coaches obviously thought he could help. Calling him a 2 or 3 star is giving too much credence to Scout's rating system.
We made fun of it, but it was done right. UW just doesn't have any bag men like the SEC so Tosh had to get his hands dirty. It was done right though. Straight cash homey. No paper trail or bank statements for the NCAA. Everything went away and Tosh, the guy who can't coach or recruit according to some here, is now coaching under Saban at Alabama.

Has that guy done anything at any level or is he slangin' slurpies on Aurora?
