The game may have passed Beamer by but va tech has been much more than Vick. He had some great defenses in those years and hes had some great running games.
It's over now but only royotisFS argued that tech was a paper tiger. They were good and I hold that 99 team as one of the better title game losing teams

They were the Canes Big East rival. They used to beat them on occasion and along with FSU were the Canes two game season

Joined Big East in 1991 1995 Big East Co-Champs, won Sugar Bowl over Texas 1996 Big East Co-Champs, lost Orange Bowl to Nebraska 1999 Big East Champs, lost BCS title game (Sugar) to FSU 2000 went 11-1 but lost to Miami who went undefeated in the Big East. Won Gator Bowl but fans are still bitter about Oregon State being picked for the Fiesta Bowl over their team.
Moved to ACC in 2004 2004 won ACC but lost Sugar Bowl to Auburn 2005 won ACC Coastal but lost ACC champ game 2007 won ACC but lost Orange Bowl to Kansas (lol) 2008 had 4 losses but won ACC and then WON Orange Bowl over Cincinnati 2010 won ACC but plungered in Orange Bowl by Stanford 2011 won ACC Coastal but lost ACC champ game, picked for Sugar Bowl and promptly lost to Michigan
The things VaTech has won are: 1 ACC (lol) and subsequent Orange Bowl win over Cincinnati (lol) to cap a 4 loss season. 2 Big East (shared title) and subsequent Sugar Bowl over Texas (pre BCS)
VaTech has been a good program for a while but the move from the Big East to the weaker ACC led to more conference titles and subsequently getting ass raped in big time bowls, except when they were fortunate enough to play Cincinnati.

Obligatory you'd give your left nut for that resume.

grammar'd that up for you.
I completely acknowledge that there were seasons when the schedule was light. But a lot of that was out of Miami's control. I know you remember how many teams pussed out of home/homes with them. Starting with Florida, then South Carolina and Auburn, teams would either just completely cancel on them or, like Michigan, insist that all the games be played at their place, which Miami agreed to do, and then Michigan still wouldn't renew even under those terms. Still, Miami they'd frequently manage some good OOC to go with a two or three game conference schedule.
And of course the biggest dodger twats of them all, ND, cancelled because the rivalry wasn't "in the spirit of what ND athletics is all about." Apparently, the Air Force Academy fit that bill just a little better.
The only program not to punk out on playing Miami OOC, and they played them a lot, was Penn State. Paterno didn't back off when Miami got good, and for that I always had a decent amount of respect for him. Joe Pa was a lot of things, but he wasn't a pussy when it came to scheduling.

that's about right. they had some quality teams, and during the Vick era their defense was lights fucking out. they were miserable to play against in the mid 90s because of their D.
the '99 team was honestly deserving of a title - they were every bit as good as FSU and would have taken their share of games in a 5 game playoff. wasn't their night and FSU played a bit over their heads in my view. FSU, of course, had the athletes to play with them, but with Vick Tech was the more dangerous team.
that fucker was something else in college. one of the best athletes I've ever seen - I'd put him a smidge over Stanback, and IS is WAY up on my list of specimen athletes who could just show up and kill you.
