I thought defensive coordinators are able to see the whole field from the sidelines.

All three of the Stoops brothers call/called from the sidelines, Mickey Andrews, Chuck Amatto, Bud Foster, Dick LaBeau, etc.

Good D-Coordinator are good D-Coordinators regardless of vantage point.
