5 Reasons UW wins on Saturday

This was potentially going to be the rambling for the week but I simply didn't have time to take an outline to a huge bloviating mess. Instead you get a post. Enjoy. Or don't.

1) 10 wins is still the goal.
1) The team has gotten better in one way or another every week. It has been a long time since we’ve seen improvement during the regular season.
2) Stanford is still a pretty good team.
2) The defense looked pretty good. Some of the players on that side of the ball are the caliber we expect.
3) Special teams played decently as well (although there were some plays that made you cringe).
3) Relatedly, if not for a block in the back that I don’t think actually affected the play, John Ross would have gotten his fifth win of the season.
4) Chris Petersen’s career record is now 96-13 and he knows a thing or two about coaching. When your defense is exhausted and your offense is struggling, but nonetheless about 25-30 yards from lead-taking field goal range, you may consider a fake punt on 4th down. Even if he made a mistake on that play call but he still gets the benefit of the doubt at this point due to his track record.
4) Sure, our quarterback gets spooked and runs away from his protection on a regular basis, but it is easier to fix one critical player’s mental lapses than entire team’s mental and physical shortcomings.
5) Sure, our quarterback has trouble with a number of throws, being a sophomore who missed Spring ball he may be able to fix some of that just by getting reps over the course of the season. We have a good enough surrounding cast that we only need a game manager to win. We don’t have to have an elite QB to be competitive and win.
5) Don James lost a game too, once, if I recall.
5) This was a tough game and the team showed real resilience and a modicum of toughness. Even one of the commentators on TV called us scrappy. That was probably the first time anyone has said that about us since Tui was playing. (no, I don’t mean Trenton)

At the end of the day there is work to be done but the season is not over. Let it play out. I am confident the coaches have been and will continue to work hard following the Stanford loss and I am certain they will have the team ready to not lose again on Saturday. I feel confident this positive effect will carry over the following week to Cal as well.
