I've moderated my own hobby board for years. I don't ban people for profanity or opposing viewpoints, only trolls who had nothing to say c.f. GB's first reply. Trolls drove away serious posters because they didn't want to read through piles of crap. When I banned or repeatedly banned trolls, they stopped coming because it was too much effort to sign up again and again, the serious posters came back.
