While I do agree that there really isn’t anything “new” or “gimmicky” happening, the good OCs/head coaches know how to stay one step ahead of defenses while taking advantage of the talent they have on their roster. And instead of waiting for defenses to figure them out, they’re tweaking things. The head coach at Chicago is a good example. Sean McVey is another. I think Kubiak in Seattle is an example of an OC who can’t stay a step ahead of the defenses for long — one reason he’s bounced around.
It’s not always about coming up with some great new scheme. And it’s not rocket surgery. But it does require some ability to think a step or two ahead of D coordinators.
