The top programs right now are basically more and more just buying the best players they can find in the portal to accompany the high school guys they buy.
Grandpa told you
-
Meaning if he goes to the NFL (Arizona Cardinals, LV Raiders, Miami Dolphins, etc etc), he wouldn't be able to take UW players with him.
-
Well they always have been to a degree but now it is more spread out than just the SEC doing it with a wink and a nod.
-
There has not always been a portal
-
Yes, those teams and other well-funded teams buy guys in the portal too.
I imagine / hope UW's portal budget will be higher than it was last year. They'll need a pass-rusher, impact DT, probably a starting corner, and well-rounded TE who can challenge DeGraaf for a starting job.
I had thought they'd definitely need a LT but they might move Mills out there and then put in Finau at LG so the 2026 starting OL without a portal guy would be:
LT: Mills (true soph)
LG: Finau (RS-Soph)
C: Hatchett (RS-JR)
RG: Champ T (RS-Frosh)
RT: Azzopardi (RS-SR)
Who knows what the staff thinks though and maybe they'd rather have more depth so they'll bring in a rising RS-SR at LT so that Mills can stay at LG and Finau / Champ T. compete at the RG spot. That would be the safer move.

Oh and probably a punter too because the current punter is not good and is very inconsistent.
-
it’s impossible to predict what next year’s team will look like. Even if Deadhead Jedd stays, he’ll lose some players people are currently counting on for next year.
There is no next year anymore. It’s today or fuck off.
-
I've always believed. The problem is the programs that are able to do this the best are the ones who also had success when the portal and NIL came about AND have been able to maintain stability. UW is way behind the 8 ball on all those things.
The Jedd strategy of we're gonna identify a bunch of 3 star Roebuck types and spend years building them up is very difficult this day and age, especially when you're not even committed to that program, and any of those guys who flash anything are gonna start fielding offers every season and you're gonna have to pay them anyway. That talk kind of just seems like kicking the can to cover your ass for mediocrity.
-
I will say I’m not rooting for my favorite program to fail because I’m not sold on the head coach. That’s stupid. The best thing I like about Judd as he is not afraid to play young players if they have talent and potential.
