It was hilarious on MLB network when they brought him on after the announcement. They mentioned he could speak English well, but he still used the translator, until a surprise appearance by Griffey. After Griffey’s remarks, Ichiro said: “George, thank you.”
I watched him a little last night on MLB with Costas. He said the only reason he speaks Japanese is that he's an awkward speaker even in his native language, and he'd be worse in English. He plans to do his induction speech in English since he has time to plan it.
If anyone is headed to the induction ceremony in July, I can give some pro tips. I have family in Cooperstown and went to both Griffey and Edgar’s induction ceremony. I’ll be there. Upstate New York is incredible during the summer and well worth the visit.
