The announcer said it was the first time a Dodger has ever had 10 RBIs in one game and the 16th time in major league history. I specifically remember that Henry Cotto of the Mariners had 10 RBIs in Toronto back in the late 80s or early 90s.
His combo plate of hits, RBIs, home runs etc has never been done
Once upon a time this would be the biggest story in sports. Maybe it's just me but I kind of shrugged. Jose Canseco who was the first 40/40 guy sent congrats to Ohani on X.
The American psyche has changed somehow. If this happened in DiMaggio's day, this feat would have transcended sport to national news the size of (I was going to say Pearl Harbor, but that doesn't work), but of D-Day or VE-Day. I know this from Richard Ben Cramer's book on Joe DiMaggio when he was going after George Sisler's hitting streak. The nation was obsessed with the hitting streak, so that it led every broadcast and was the talk on subways and small town USA.
I think the 70s were the golden age of baseball and it maintained pretty good momentum through the 80s. You had Hank Aaron passing Ruth. Pete Rose chasing DiMagio's streak. There were some great World Series. The A's dynasty and the rebirth of the Yankees.
The strike probably hurt a lot. For me I still wanted to watch Junior and of course the magical season on 1995. When the M's returned to form in the early Oughts I really started to lose interest
In 2002 I heard Howard Lincoln on KJR say that we're not like Boston and New York where all they care about is the World Series. The Mariners were more about providing a fun family environment. When I heard that I was like "Why am I a diehard fan of a team that acknowledges they're not doing everything they can to win?"
I have only attended two Mariner games in 22 years. I do not watch them at all on TV.
You are correct…I used to read at least 2 newspapers daily…now I touch a screen to read what catches my attention. Media (social and otherwise) created an environment where you can get what you want, whenever you want it. NFL, NBA, MLB, Hockey, Futbol, Pickleball, Surfing…24/7, 365.
More people watched the shitty TNF game than Ohtani…I watched him on my iPad, because I'm a baseball guy.
To answer your question, it was the greatest single game performance ever IMO…
