Massachusetts State Police attempting to confiscate a stockpile of
recently-banned assault weapons & ammunition were ambushed by a
heavily-armed group of right-wing extremists. Local law enforcement
estimates that 72 people were killed and more than 200 injured before
officers were forced to withdraw.
Earlier in the week, governor of Massachusetts, Thomas Gage, issued a ban
on military-style assault weapons & ordered a mandatory confiscation of all
illegal weapons. Police were initially successful in the confiscation, but
were met with armed resistance after reaching the city of Lexington. During
a tense standoff in the city park, Colonel Francis Smith, the commander in
charge of the operation, ordered the extremist group to surrender & return
to their homes. Suddenly, a shot rang out, believed to have been fired by
one of the extremists. Before order could be restored, more civilians from
the surrounding areas descended upon the police forces. Col. Smith,
realizing that they were overwhelmed by the angry mob, had no choice but to
order his officers to retreat.
