Used to say Dawgs when I was at UW in early 80s, but the argument then was whether to use Dog vs. Dawg since we weren’t southern red necks

That's a whole other thing. The Malamute live mascots are way better looking that actually huskies. Better looking dawg makes better looking Dawgs!
Makes Dawg sense to me.
