Thoughts on Fisch & Staying Long

I hope Dannen told Grubb to get some HC experience and check back in 23 months

Who is “they”? You get what you can negotiate, no one is stopping anyone from doing that.Postal91 said:
They really need to make buy-outs variable based on record/performance, and who is paying it.dtd said:
ffs, Bama just paid a $12,000,000 buyout. ADs need to start tying the buyout to the total value of the contract. We'll pay you $1,000,000 more per year but your buyout is 50% of the contract. You can even be HONEST about it. Hey we want to make it as toxic as possible for another progrum to hire you away because we love you. We're willing to pay a premium but you need to agree to this buyout.
- If leaving for Power 4 conf, buyout is 2x, if record is over .750, buyout is 3x
- If performance is below .500, Buyout = Winning % x Stated Buyout.
Then I'm good with those numbers above. -
Florida is kind of a trainwreck and a tough place to win with Georgia and increasingly Missouri waiting to prison rape you every season. Miami will be married to Cristobal for a while longer. I think the most likely place to take him from us in the near future is the Eagles given he was their GMs roommate and Nick Sirianni is an annoying douchebag who is now losing. But that's all predicated on him winning here so if he leaves for the NFL so be it, at least he wouldn't be able to take players and likely even all the coaches with him.

IF Fisch is the guy that contract is getting re-negotiated after Year 2
It’s really a nothing burger IMO -
Agreed. There’s a low probability he sees year 3 in the current form… either wayTequilla said:IF Fisch is the guy that contract is getting re-negotiated after Year 2

People are overly obsessed with Fisch’ history of job changes.
If you’re built to be successful as a head coach at the highest levels then that is what your resume looks like unless you are lucky enough to find a good coordinator job with a good head coach. Fisch wasn’t that lucky.
He went from GA to NFL OC in 13 years. Every step up was a promotion.
Then he GOT FIRED after two years. Blake Bortles was his qb so maybe not his fault who knows.
That set him back to being a position coach at Michigan but two years later he gets another OC opportunity- at UCLA.
That year Mora GETS FIRED. So presumably Fisch was out of a job, he moves two steps backward again to be an analyst for the Rams (same city.)
Three years later he gets the head coaching job at Arizona which kind of came out of left field since he was a position coach in New England but the talk was that a lot of coaches were vouching for him.
He rebuilds that program in 3 years but the Arizona administration fucks around with him so now he is at Washington.
To sum up, the two times he got to a position of responsibility where he could potentially stay for a few years without harming his career he got fired.
And then he may have used Arizona as a stepping stone but then again Arizona and its administration suck and don’t care about football as demonstrated by not signing his contract.
Supposedly UW does care about football. So let’s LIPO. If he succeeds here I don’t see why he would jump to another job more than any other potential hire. -
$12M is still one of the highest buyouts in CFB, like top-5.thechatch said:
While correct it makes Fisch an immediate target for any major program or NFL team if he performs, and reduces the return for UW if he were to leave.FremontTroll said:You guys realize there are two parties in a contract negotiation?
What leverage did UW have here? None, Fisch was set for next year with a pre-season top 10 team and a contract extension on the table. UW was without a coach after the music had already stopped.
They still got the coach they wanted. They didn’t overpay.
Whether the buyout is $6m or $20m it’s not going to dissuade the programs that might come after Fisch if he is successful here.
As much as you like the idea in your head of forcing a coach to stay via HAVING A CONTRACT it’s just not gonna happen.
UW athletic dept isn’t rolling on cash. They need a hedge if Fisch leaves and this highlights the lack of leverage on the part of the AD, as you said.
If Fisch sucks year 1 but wins 9 games year 2, that’s probably enough for Florida to pull the trigger, and then you’re looking for another coach. Fisch signed that deal with one foot out the door already, because he could. UW was over the barrel.
It’s a good deal for UW if they can get 20 guys from the AZ team to come with him but I’m not sure if that’s gonna happen or not. -
