This team would get 7-9 yards on 1st down, huck the ball in a low percentage play on 2nd, and then get stuffed or miss the throw on 3rd. Rinse and repeat. There were flashes of brilliance mixed with flashes of incompetence. It wasn’t a talent issue.
The defense did just enough, as always, to keep the team in the game. In fact, the defense really should be commended for allowing the offense an opportunity to blow the games wide open (outside of USC).
I think that 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1 (I can’t remember) where we tried to do some cute offensive line blocks and our RB got stuffed waiting for the blocks to develop encapsulated the my feelings of the game and the team this season.
It feels like every time we were in a make or break situation, Odunze saved us.
it has been magical season, everything that could go wrong did and this team still won. I just hope this team plays 30 min of it best football next week and that should be enough to win.
Oh, now it's a miracle if UW doesnt drop the last two after a 12-0 season with wins over 4 ranked teams??
A miracle he says.
You guys would honestly be happier with 10-2 like I said in my OP. Embarassing

You've built a nice strawman there. Congratulations.
I don't know what 10-2 team you're talking about. If you're talking about last season, that was an 11-2 team that was arguably the best team in the conference by year's end and went a long way toward backing that up by beating Texas in a bowl game to end the season on a positive note. Follow that up with an unbelievable amount of firepower choosing to come back and play school, and last offseason was such a positive time that Hardcore Husky nearly shut down from lack of things to bitch about.
Let's contrast that with what many here fear is coming: The 12-0 house of cards comes crashing down like EVERYONE.gif (except PGOS and Race) expects, Huskies finish 12-2 (if they can't beat Oregon, they're not beating Ohio State or Alabama in an NY6), Penix, Odunze, Fautanu, DJ, etc. all leave for the draft. PGOS gets bombarded with screenshots and taunts of, "11-2 and everyone coming back sounds pretty good right about now, eh?"
Again, win and all is forgiven. In the meantime, criticizing anyone for being concerned about the immediate prospects is just doogish. 12-0 only matters if they keep winning. Lose the next game, and the higher launching point just means an even more painful landing.
The greatest thing about this team, and at the same time the most maddening, is that anytime they need a stop and/or a score to put the game into cruise control, they absolutely fail every damn time. (End of the first half against Wazzu the latest of many examples)
But when they absolutely need a stop and/or a score to actually win a game, they have never failed to deliver (end of the game against Wazzu is the latest of many examples). Fucking maddening, yet awesome.

I've only been to Vegas once. I don't enjoy the stress of gambling, so I tried devising a foolproof betting strategy. It started with double-up blackjack. You find the table with the largest spread between maximum and minimum bet, start with the minimum bet, and double your bet every time you lose. Eventually you'll win, and you'll get everything back plus the table minimum. Where the winning piles up is taking advantage of leveraged hands (doubling down or splits) while money is piled on the table from losing. I'd played this strategy a few times in the past and quickly won a couple hundred bucks and walked away every time.
To really leverage this strategy, I downloaded a blackjack simulator. You could program in dozens of rules for it to play by and let it run. It would play a million hands in a matter of seconds. So, for instance, you tell it the table minimum and maximum, how big your bankroll is, how much you lose before walking away, how much you win before walking away, how many other players are at the table, etc.
After dicking around with this simulator for a whole afternoon, the shocking result was the EVERY theoretical player I created went bankrupt. Every single one. Double-up blackjack seems impossible to lose. On a $5-$2000 table, you have to lose nine times in a row to bust out. Turns out it's pretty likely over an even relatively short horizon.
But I gave it a try anyway. Sure enough, I was up about a hundred bucks in no time flat on a dealer at the Sahara, then she went on a tear. Next thing I know I have $1280 in chips on the table and a crowd gathered around. Dealer gets a 7. She deals me a 16. I have to hit it. Got a lucky 4, collected my $5 winnings, walked the fuck right out of there to join my friends at the strip club instead.
Point is, one way to look at this is a gritty team refusing to lose and being undefeated. Another way to look at this is that this is the sixth time they've lost eight hands in a row on that blackjack table and gotten away with it. Living that way is a bankrupting ninth loss waiting to happen.

You can be glad the team won and still acknowledge the coaching staff came up with a shit gameplan on offense and horrible time management.
This team has another gear and standard that they have not come close to for quite a while when you're watching all the other contenders hit their stride.
Exactly. It's not like some weird triple-tipped pass pick 6 puts us in a hole that makes the game a squeaker.
Unforced coaching blunders are to blame for the lack of separation against shit tier competition.
We repeatedly kill ourselves in the dick. And win anyway.
The gear is there to beat any team in the country, the staff has held it back from performing to that level.

You basically ran a Monte Carlo simulation. Fun shit. Over a long enough horizon those kinds of runs are pretty common. That's what the house counts on.
One way to offset it is to play multiples. Takes a bigger bankroll and a lot longer to win anything but also a lot longer to lose or pull double 7 losses in a row. Ultimately the house will win on a long enough horizon but you can spend essentially an eternity if you like drinking and smoking while gambling and come out on top in short spurts.
I like playing roulette(with the actual ball) this way and can generally put a few hundred bucks in my pocket over an hour or two. The trouble is your risking an outsized bankroll for it and taking a long time to do it. Better to make money the old fashioned way but if you want to enjoy some gambling and get free booze it's not a bad way to go.
Csb tldr I feel THIS describes our season. Can Deboner and Penix manage to win on at least 1 more hand to cover the bankroll and some cash in pocket or will they lose it and walk out of the casino down after being up big with only the ride itself to appreciate?
I feel like everyone has solved the riddle of this offense and Grubb's play calling tendencies. He isn't scheming anyone wide open anymore. They need to figure out how to hit reset.
Oregon can get pressure on Penix. The short passing game and running game are critical. Figure it out.

With DJ hurt, and Burch becoming the best edge setter that I’ve seen this year, I feel like this game is going to ride on Penix finding that extra gear we know he has.
Something that strikes me about the offense's super aggressive approach is it's almost opponent proof. The challenge in completing the 30 yard back shoulder across the field is in the timing and accuracy of the throw. If done right, the best corner in the country won't stop it. If done wrong, the worst corner in the country won't even need to stop it.
Which is why I think you can see this team beat anyone and (almost) lose to anyone.
Compare that to what Oregon does, which is highly opponent-dependent. They'll execute what they do perfectly almost every time and whether it's stopped depends on how well the opponent tackles in space and attacks blocks in space. Which is why you sometimes see Oregon struggle against good, physical defenses but also blow the doors off of bad and average teams.
The good news is this all makes Washington's offense very high ceiling because it can beat great defenses if it's going well. It also means the floor is pretty low, particularly if Penix is off and/or you're trying to chuck it 40 yards down field in the wind and rain.

I like to say that you never bet against human nature. The players cared about the games after Oregon as much as we? did - meaning all any of cared about is this next game against Oregon
Did Oregon perform better? Yes they had to. They lost. Again. They had to grab Washington coattails like a man in a windstorm
I've seen UW go 12-0 twice. I've seen Billy Joe Hobart and Michael Penix. I consider myself lucky
I really don't care how people handle this. Some folks just need to freak out. I get it. There is plenty to criticize and this isn't dawgman.
But it is a hell of a ride and UW is going to beat Oregon for the hat trick
