The AC has always been an event, rife with passion, shit talking between co-workers, friends, families...It is intense, and it is fun. That's not happening with Purdue, or Northwestern, or Wisky, or anyone else in the B1G...I don't know about y'all, but I have a hell of a lot more interest going forward with the AC, as opposed to non-conference games with San Jose State, Tulsa, Nevada (Chris Tormey alert!), Georgia State...et.al.
I was talking to someone today about Thanksgiving football, and it really pisses me off that Texas and aTm no longer play on Thanksgiving, because aTm bitched out when they went to the SEC. They are rivals, rivals who haven't played each other for years...
Wherever the Cuog end up, I hope they kick ass, and I hope the Dawgs kick their ass, every year, Montlake, Lumen, Pullman, or fucking Ellensburg...same as it ever was
The attendance numbers alone are probably going to be higher than plenty of the conference games with shitty Big dreck. Higher ratings too. House money.

We usually see eye to eye, but I don't think clinging to tradition played more than a tiny part in the power shift in college football away from the west coast. Not only do I disagree that the conference was hell-bent on tradition (other than the tradition of having the shittiest wefs in the country), prime example being adding Utah and Colorado after trying to add Texas and Oklahoma, but I disagree that "tradition" really moves the needle in the power dynamics anyway.Doog_de_Jour said:But UW and other west coast schools kept sacrificing what was best for them on the altar of maintaining tradition for far too long, which enabled the SEC and B1G to jump ahead while the Pac 12 slowly bled out.
From the cheap seats where I sit, I saw two of the local high school programs fail to field a football team in different years. If you told somebody even two decades ago that either Bellingham or Anacortes High School would fail to field a football team in the near future, they'd think you were crazy. The Bellingham cancellation was right around the start of the PAC-12 slide. CTE news, the rise of soccer domestically, and lazy game/internet addicted kids--among other things--have led to a demographics shift in football that has disproportionately impacted the west coast and northeast. And it's not just playing but viewing/going to games. It's a lot easier to get a kid to come play for your school when a.) you can hand him a giant bag of cash donated under the table by an oil tycoon and b.) you walk him onto the sideline to look up at 105,000 screaming fans. As opposed the 55,000 and a lot of empty seats at The Greatest Setting°.
And it's not just demographics that drive that regional fan engagement. It's money, like with everything else. More than anything, the PAC-12 died because it was horribly mismanaged and unlucky with timing. At the time Tennis Boy signed the old TV deal, wasn't it the biggest in the land? Edit: Quick google, and I was right:...Before he signed a historic 12-year, $3 billion TV deal with Fox and ESPN in spring 2011, he failed to add an escape clause. That locked in the Pac-12 until 2024, which left it vulnerable to having its teams poached by Power 5 conferences with bigger subsequent annual media-rights payouts.
Everyone was blowing a load at the time of the deal, not understanding that being first usually means getting fucked. That deal set the floor, ESPN and FOX bought their respective conferences and went to war with each other, and the PAC-12 suddenly became an afterthought, with both FOX and ESPN doing their level best to knock them down to prop up their own products. Money talks and marketing works, the PAC became and inferior product and west coast football fans with better things to do starting doing those better things instead of obsessing over football. Down south, where ESPN made sure college football stayed the local religion, it's still the local religion. See the seven consecutive @SECDAWG posts in response to this for confirmation.
The conference could have abandoned all traditions--hell, Oregon could have played a home game dressed as Cal, even!--and it wouldn't have changed any of the above. The conference was doomed in 2011 when the last media deal was signed. -

California was the lifeblood of west coast football. There was enough for everyone. Declining numbers and national teams poaching has culled the herd
The legitimate criticism of west coast 4 and 5 stars compared to the south is real
