    Not exactly, it depends on the type, silica, yes, that's
    like sand, but there are many forms of silica/silicon/silicone and whether its pure or a carbide media for blasting or micro prill, pellet..or..?
    The article says "not a threat to the public" but that's not necessarily true either it just depends on the material how much and how fine.
    Being exposed to silica dust can lead to silicosis...

    The pellets can have some amount of dust also.

    It's a stupid headline trying to make something out of nothing. A train derailed and spilled some sand. The horror. Like there wouldn't be some dust with the sand.

    The pellets can be vacuumed up. I know, I have done it myself. We used silicone media all the time in my chemical business and we repackaged for an OEM. If it makes it to the sewer or a lake, that could create a mess for sure but no one is dying from this leakage.
