Eleven newly arrived University of Washington freshman football players have claimed Husky numbers, creating their initial college identities.
Beginning with the lowest digit, wide receiver Rashid Williams will play as No. 3, obtaining the old number for Taj Davis, a wideout who now plays for California.
Quarterback Austin Mack chose 10, a number that previously made a first-round NFL draft pick out of Jake Locker a dozen years ago.
Wide receiver Taeshaun Lyons will wear No. 15, which creates an interesting dilemma — it already belongs to little-used pass-catcher Jabez Tinae, which means the latter player is going to have to change numbers ... or will be leaving the program.
Cornerback Curley Reed will answer to No. 16, the number the Huskies' All-America wide receiver candidate Rome Odunze first wore before switching to No. 1.
Safety Vincent Holmes will pull on No. 18, a number that hasn't brought anyone much attention over the past three decades, outside of a couple of kickers.
Corner Leroy Bryant draws No. 23, a number fellow Husky corner Mishael Powell wore before he discarded it last season for 3.
Edge rusher Jacob Lane chose No. 48, a number worn the past five seasons by veteran linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio, who now sports No. 5.
Offensive lineman Soane Faasolo, all 6-foot-8 and 280 pounds of him, will squeeze into No. 68, which sixth-year senior Ulumoo Ale, and his 6-foot-6, 331-pound physique, currently fills out on defense after playing on the offensive line.
Offensive lineman Kahlee Tafai picked No. 74, which Corey Luciano, last year's starting center and now graduated, made a game-day presence.
Yet another offensive lineman, Elishah Jackett, will dress out in No. 76, a number last worn by graduated center Luke Wattenberg, now with the Denver Broncos.
Finally, wide receiver Keith Reynolds will wear No. 89, an odd-ball number usually worn by kickers or walk-ons.
Transfers Jalen Klemm and Darren Barkins, an offensive lineman from Kansas State and a cornerback from Oregon, respectively, won't report until fall camp, when they'll bid for their UW uniform numbers .
The line about the number 10 making Lockner a first round pick is dumb even by DRFS standards.
