I actually like U2. They have a few albums I'll listen to about once a year. Joshua Tree is an all-timer and the played out songs still sound good. The Edge's guitar playing is easy to pick on for being repetitive but to me it's unique and its own thing instead of a 10 millionth blues or metal guitar player type shit.
That said, once I told anyone I met in Ireland that Thin Lizzy was my favorite band they immediately perked up and said that Thin Lizzy should be Ireland's true iconic rock band and Phil Lynott their musician.
Even if Bono palled around with Epstein, U-2 is a legendary band.
They are, but I keep coming back to the position that they are still vastly overrated.
2 legendary albums with Joshua Tree (easily on the Mt Rushmore of 1980's rock LPs) and Achtung Baby. Pre Joshua Tree they had some "good, not great" LPs and a number of classic tracks. Nothing post Achtung Baby appeals to me at all.
I almost totally agree with this. They are not vastly overrated due to the two albums you mention. If you removed those two from their catalog, vastly overrated they would be.
Pre Zooropa U2 is amazing. Post Zooropa U2 is meh.

This is a fair take I think and I agree. The Edge is not a virtuoso on par with the all time rock guitar greats and his playing is heavy on affects (effects? grammar nazis? ) like delay. When you listen to a song like "Pride" , at least, they were doing stuff that was new and fun vs the 10 millionth technical shredding stuff.
And we all know how much I hate technically gifted shredding.

Affect is a verb. Just remember that and you're set.
Only douchebag, amateur wannabes better suited for guitar hero criticize rock guitarists for a lack of technical skill. It's pretty low on the list of requirements to be a solid or even good guitarist.

Well you use guitar "effects" pedals to achieve certain tones, but I get confused because the pedal is "affecting" the sound.
Most (not all) of the greatest rock songwriters were not elite, technically gifted guitarists. Townshend, Lennon, Richards, Dylan, Young, etc, etc,
I didn’t know there were so many U2 fags on this board. ‘It’s the end of the world as wet now it… and I feel fine” that song sucks just like Bloody Monday
