The important stuff is already on the cell carrier's servers, and the NSA can request it anytime they like.

Destroying your phone won't do anything.

Supposedly they were using private messaging services that didn't go through the cell providers.

If the message is going through your cell phone's data plan, then your cell carrier can store it for the NSA, who can decrypt it regardless of the private messaging app.

The only way to avoid that is if you only use your phone via WiFi and always have it in Airplane mode, and I doubt this was the case for any of them.
