REAL Americans aren't scared by brown people

    Profound Professor.... Profound.

We need those little brown hustlers to pick the fields, make the hotel beds and take care of creeps lawn. No objecting to, nor discounting this.

What we don't need is the local governments deciding that every little brown man that ICE is attempting to deal with has somehow gotten a raw deal and is allowed to scurry back into the cracks.

We also need our Brown people here illegally to pull their weight and not continue to expand the anchor baby factory.

But really... It's your own fucked up state at the end of the day. So do whatever you want.

Just don't cry to us here when your activist mayors and sheriff's start ending up in jail themselves.

Pretty much agree. The one piece of the sanctuary city logic that I am somewhat sympathetic to - and I'm sure that a compromise could be worked out here - is that we don't want every brown person who is hear illegally to be afraid to talk to the cops out of fear of deportation. We want them to rat on their neighbors when applicable.

My go-to on this is the Scalia dissents on Roe and his abortion theories. Leaving something that important to state rights? Ok, sure. If that lands w/ the states, everything else short of national security (hi @oregonblitzkrieg ) arguably lands too.

All I'll say is this: this federalism thing is hard (it's hard), always has been, always will be. It's an ongoing experiment, as you know, and our founders knew it. You know - you were there!

Actually, I lied. I'll say this too: during my pretend clerkship at an appellate court after LS I wrote the opinion on a case involving a partition action to separate the surface and mineral estates on a few thousand acres of timberland. Easy, right? No, it was on an Injun Rez (hi @Swaye ). Most complicated shit you'll ever deal with ... the overlay of 150 years of helter skelter Injun policy has created a jurisdictional mess on the Rez, and real property is where it's the biggest mess.

Bottom line is that, even in those cases, federal law trumps (hee hee) supreme because the rez exists only as a matter of congressional law. The states are different. They have more teeth in this thing, and state's rights are in fact complex. Certainly too much so for Sledog.

    I'm out.

Feds make, fund and enforce immigration law. States cannot impede federal law, but they don’t have to use their personnel, jails or funds to enforce federal laws. Don’t forget: California is a sovereign state.

This is nothing like Jim Crow. California is not rejecting federal law. If trump needs to deport Mexican nationals to promote his nationalist-nativist agenda, he’s free to do so. He will not get any California tax dollars to support that idiotic agenda. Lipo.

US law is supreme. States are sovereign. Good luck Orange County (which has the most amazing bars and beaches btw.)

The feds kick lots of money to the states for law enforcement. That they all fora phone call isn't exactly costly.

    This is truth.

On all federal grants there is a certification requiring cities to comply with federal law. Not just some federal laws - all of them.

At some point, this Trump card will be played and the $$$ flow will stop. My money is on Seattle or San Fran to be the poster whipping boys. If Inslee keeps up his shit, Seattle is odds on favorite.

Please cite the federal law California is not complying with. Our sanctuary state laws are specifically structured to differentiate between federal and state law. Enforce trump stupidity on your own dime.

This “federal money” argument is a fucking joke. About 18 cents of every federal dollar is attributable to California. You are lucky to have us...

Which all circuits back to a path that needs to be legislated or EO’d. But the activists legislators on the left will never have it as it takes away their ace in the hole. Easier And more politically fruitful for them to continue to play hide and seek with the undocs. The ones that the left act to care so much about. But have no interest in truly helping at the end of the day.

Eventually an activist mayor or sheriff will go too far and end up in a cell on a Federal obstruction of justice charge. That’s when the game changes.

Yep. It's a cynical ploy for votes.

So you couldn’t afford it. Got it.

Maybe bring the grandkids for a day at Disneyland some day. Start saving!

In the meantime, are you going to do something?

Yeah, I'm going to watch it go until the people figure out how stupid and expensive uber liberal policy is and see them do something about it. I afforded it for a long time and still could, Not going to fund or live in that shithole no more! You have fun.
