I'll see you this and throw in a power ranking of coach hires. Spoiler alert - UO did not fare well

    Facilities. Yeah.

We could do an oral history on this going back to Lambo and the UO indoor practice facility that Rick got Babs to build.

A Chronicle panel of 10 writers and editors put their noggins together to come up with a catalog of the most important factors making a program great.

    The top 10:

    1. Facilities.

    2. History (recent and past).

    3. Money (that a school spends -

    and not on recruits).

    4. Recruiting (the area from which

    to draw).

    5. Conference.

    6. Attendance/game day atmosphere/campus geography.

    7. Brand name/prestige.

    8. Exposure/TV.

    9. NFL draftees.

    10. Coaching (stability).

Also receiving votes: Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Louisville, BYU, Boise State and Washington. (Louisville? Really?)

So fs. AtM ranked 5 spots over Miami. AtM, which has never won shit and hasn't a fraction of Miami's trophy case. And Oregon ... Jesus H. Christ, is only one spot down:

    15. Miami (26)

"The U" is still considered a cool place to play because the beach never goes away. Alum Mark Richt has the program again springing in the right direction, but the Hurricanes will be hard-pressed to match the flashiness and gaudiness of the 1980s and early 1990s - and that's probably a good thing.

Translation: we're going to write this stupid thing about the beach, even though it's a 1/2 hour from Coral Cables, because we can't fit Miami into our fs theory here. Why you ask?

Because they've never had facilities, attendance or money, and yet have won 5 national titles, Rose, Orange, Cotton and Sugar bowls, played for two other titles, had more draft day records, produced more pro bowl players, more wins over #1 teams, longest home winning streak, blah blah ... and generally kicked ass. Even the HOF thing ... in the next few years, Miami might conceivably jump from tied for sixth to knocking on the door or surpassing SC and ND: Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Frank Gore, Devin Hester, and Vince Wilfork would give them 13, and if by chance they ever see clear to inducting Edge, it'll be 14.

So, you wanna run that bullshit theory by me again?

Let the creep esplain it for you: recruits and coaching. If the recruits are in your backyard, it's generally easier to get them to come play for you. If there is an adult in charge of coaching them, you're a winner. It's that simple.

Then I'd say history and name recognition come next, but only because that helps you recruit.

    The rest is bullshit.
