Fake News! NYT did a thing in the immediate wake of Harvey on how Dutch water engineers are amazed at how poorly Texas handles flooding. Not just Harvey-level flooding, but regular flooding. It's about channeling, diversion, and protecting areas that are regularly threatened. It's not like they don't do it; they do. But they don't do it very well because few Texans want to pay to do it right.

When @BearsWiin posted this I tried to respond with Branau am Inn? But Vanilla kept saying my post wouldn't go through until it was approved. How can the name of some pudunk Austrian town trigger Vanilla like that?

Hallstatt. Took the kids there for the first time this April. Told them not to drink the water.

Oh yes, basically the most picturesque lakeside town on the planet. I seem to recall one of Rick Steve's episodes passing through there.

Rick Steves ruined it for those of us who knew about it before. My mother first went there in 1961, then took her family (myself included) back in 1967, 1977, 1981, 1984, 1985, 1988, and 1990. After she died in 1997 without leaving any instructions, the family decided that Hallstatt was the place to put her ashes. I went there first, in 1998, so the task fell to me. I put them in the waterfall above town so she would have one last journey through town on her way to the lake.

Went there again this last April. Even in 1998 it was getting too crowded during the day with daytrippers on big tour buses parking in Lahn, but you'd have the town to yourself after they left in the evening. Now it's overrun with Asians. It seems the fake Hallstatt that the Chinese built doesn't compare to the original.

Rick Steves or no - and I'm sure he's probably given away some hidden gems no doubt for the sake of selling his books - not much that can be done about the rise of China and how that impacts tourism in Europe. It's an though the swarming hordes from the East were once again at the Gate of Vienna.

The thing that bugs me more than the influx of the eastern lidless is that, with the EU and Schengen and whatnot, the people doing much of the gruntwork in the tourist industry (waiters/waitresses, housekeeping staff in hotels and apartments, even a fair amount of the touristy music stuff in Vienna) are now staffed by Turks, Romanians, and Czechs/Slovaks. A generation ago, with the Iron Curtain up, there was no real influx of cheap labor, so a tourist experience in a place like Austria was very Austrian. Now it's more international and less, well, quaint and "authentic."

That's a good point. Last time I was on the continent was in '94 (have been to the UK a few times since) and it was all natives working in hospitality regardless of where you were. When I when I was in London this last spring - and I know it's a not the best example of a quaint little town - it was like checking into a hotel in Warsaw.

Europe deserves to get plungered by the islamofucks, just as they are getting plungered by loss of tourist dollars. Watch them vote Merkel in for a 4th term. Asia >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Europe
