Worldwide leader 2nd best cfb game of 2017 playing
And that tells you everything you need to know about what is wrong with cfb today. In the attempt to gain more eyeballs, the game has become the fall outdoor version of Arena Football.
Ultimately I don't think it works, but with CTE, the game in it's current version will not be around in another 25 years anyway. My fear is it becomes 7 on 7 underwear flag football Olympics.
Now back to the big story. The status of Taylor Rapp??

No ... what CTE require is for the game to be made safer through a combination of equipment and technique
-
Maybe technique, but when you have 250 lb linebackers running a 4.5 colliding with a 220 lb running back running a 4.3 that collision is just plain violent and nasty.
If the helmets can be constructed to support the neck and absorb the contact so as to eliminate or reduce 98% of the concussions then I think there's still a chance.

Yeah there were never shootouts until now. Every game was won with defense, grit and determination. I yearn for the days of the 3-3 tie.

PC America, the game has about 10 years left.

That'll help about as much as seatbelts in a plane crash. -

That's just not possible. Helmets today are about as good as physically possible in distributing impact evenly around it. What can't be stopped, and what causes CTE are two giant, fast men hitting each other and going from 15mph to a dead stop instantly causing the brain to jar around inside the skull. No helmet will ever prevent or stop this.godawgst said:Maybe technique, but when you have 250 lb linebackers running a 4.5 colliding with a 220 lb running back running a 4.3 that collision is just plain violent and nasty.

The techniques are where there will he improvement. The "Hawk Tackle" the Seahawks started using is a huge step in the right direction. There is no jarring contact and it allows for natural slowing of momentum during a tackle. The ex-NFL lineman that UW brought on to teach grappling and hand technique will be the future in the trenches. The initial big impact goes away and it's mostly just hand fighting and shoving like two drunk Irish guys.
Offenses have changed a lot also. There aren't many offenses running a 240lb Fullback and Lineman aren't pulling to hammer D-ends nearly as much. Most pulling is a buck sweep type of thing where a lineman is going for a DB and that usually ends up with minimal contact.
High schools in all states as of this season now have no hitting a player who isn't paying attention eliminating the crack block, or at least the violent crack block. Also if your helmet is the first thing to make contact in any play it's a personal foul.
Lastly, practices are light years different from what they were just five years ago. Everyone standing around whooping at an Oklahoma drill is going the way of the dinosaur. Most high level high school programs on up are only in full pads once a week instead of three like was the norm. Two-a-Day practices are gone.
Football is fine and it will be tweaked even more towards safety over the next ten years like eliminating kick-offs (which I am 100% against for competitive reasons) and chop blocking outside the tackle box (already a HS rule).
