What's wrong with a balanced attack?

Jake has some real strengths to his game, but also rea weaknesses. His main supporters point to stats as to why he's good and his stats are good, but stats are for losers and as we all know, Jake's biggest weakness is that he's a loser.
However, what Jake is great at is dissecting a defense and he's really good at mid-range passing as well. Scrambling on 3rd down is another big strength.
Jake's deep ball is awful.
Hmmm -- so, what should our offense look like? Exactly what it DIDN'T look like last year.
No boom/bust attempts to create "explosive plays" (I fear the whole obsession with explosive plays will ruin our offense this year). No fucking triple reverses on first downs against good teams or whatever the fuck.
It should simply be an offense that's called 60/40 run with a ton of control in there for Jake to check into different plays (he will almost certainly check us into more passes than runs).
Play action and mid range (under 30 yards) passing should be unstoppable for this team. Gaskin and Coleman both get better as games go on.
With our defense, if we keep the ball and limit opportunities for the other team, we will pretty much destroy everyone.
However, Babushka will almost certainly see this as a team that needs to stretch the field with Pettis and think of the run game as simply a way to keep the D off balance for down-field bombs.
Pete is an amazing coach, but he has a real weakness when it comes to assessing assistants. Smith has been terrible every year he's been here and Prince was awful for Pete before that.
We SHOULD run Gaskin and Coleman, run play-actions, have Jake pick up 3rd downs with his legs and streamroll teams.
However, it will just be a repeat of the Cal/WSU offensive game plans that work against teams we are 10x better than and get us nowhere against teams with similar talent.

When the running game is gashing the opponent it is important to start throwing the ball because they won't see it coming.
And no one covers the fullback so 40 yard sideways passes work as well.
Coaches are fucking idiots that think they are smart and love to hear Kirk Herbstreit suck their dick on TV about their innovative offense and great playcalling -
If we can keep Jake's runs to under 3 per game that would be wonderful. We can lose a Gaskin or a Pettis or one OL or even someone on the other side of the ball and still blow through the schedule. Lose Jake and the season goes to shit.Dennis_DeYoung said:We SHOULD run Gaskin and Coleman, run play-actions, have Jake pick up 3rd downs with his legs and streamroll teams.
This. Given he missed winter weight training and is missing Ross, hopefully someone in the brain trust is coming up with a way to stretch the field.Dennis_DeYoung said:Jake's deep ball is awful.

The offense will be better this year. Jake will be improved and I have faith that Petersen recognizes how good the O-Line/RB combination is and he will have a nice chat with Babushka about being cute with shitty Bubble Screens.
