64% of Americans have a positive reaction to the term

Even better 60% of Americans say the government should be responsible for ensuring health care coverage for all Americans. Pew Research Center.

But it's a crazy far left pipe dream. And Bernie never could have won running on something like that.

In theory it makes sense. The execution is problematic just as this fucking around with private public attempts is.
I am almost worn down enough to give it a shot. Obama won -

Until Hospitals can tell patients "hey, you're probably gonna die. No, you aren't getting that wonderful new treatment you've been reading about. Deal with it"
Healthcare will never be "fixed" -
That happened with my sister. An oncologist told us that she qualified for an experimental new drug that had shown promise against pancreatic cancer. Then the next day we were told that the oncologist made an error and that my sister didn't qualify. This was devastating news.doogie said:Until Hospitals can tell patients "hey, you're probably gonna die. No, you aren't getting that wonderful new treatment you've been reading about. Deal with it"

If "Medicare for all" = Death Squads...sure.
At some point - and I'm being a completely heartless bastard but I can do math - there has to be a realization that keeping granny alive at age 96 for 3 more days at $50K per day is just beyond fucking stupid. These old people grew up in the Depression - they understand the meaning of a dollar.
I don't know if that means lifetime caps on spending and a sliding/reducing schedule as time passes - but there is no annuity that I'm aware of that exponentially increases the payout as time passes. Eventually the money runs out.

Exactly. My granny is 97 y/o and in assisted living which the Family pays for most of. But she wants to go. And I would gladly push the button for her if they would let it happen. I think having that option for people that want to go would also save alot of money in that regard.PurpleThrobber said:If "Medicare for all" = Death Squads...sure.

We have this Six Million Dollar Man - we can rebuild him mentality in this country when it comes to medicine. Sure, you can rebuild him - but take into account that he drank like a fish for 40 years of his life, probably smoked or chewed, didn't get enough exercise along the way and made all sorts of shitty life choices. And, frankly, eventually, the parts just wear out.salemcoog said:

Of course, nobody is going to say "push granny off a cliff" when she reaches 85 - but the amount of time, money and effort we spend on a person's last few months of life in this country is fucking ridiculous. You want to start going after the military-industrial complex and the false economy it creates, feel free to go after the assisted living homes and surgeons prescribing multi-tens of thousands of dollar operations with absolutely no chance of a reasonable amortization of those costs. Unless you're talking a useful life in terms of weeks instead of decades.

The GOP is never going to let you decide when you're done. It makes them uncomfortable to let you make those weighty decisions on your own.salemcoog said:

And god forbid medical MJ ever factors in dealing with a bunch of bullshit that the pharma industry has taken on as their profit centers.

Our military leaders firmly believe that obesity is our biggest threat to national security long term. I've heard many of them say it. It's not an invasion, it's being too pathetic to stop it. The cost is crippling, the stress on the body even in the short term is devastating, and it makes us lazy and pathetic.PurpleThrobber said:If "Medicare for all" = Death Squads...sure.

Here is what I know of going all over the world with places that have socialized medicine and other that really have none. People take way more responsibility for their health than Americans. We live under the mind set that you can do whatever you want your whole life and doctor man will fix you when you are broken.
If we spent half of what we spent on heart disease on preventative care instead our healthcare would pay for itself in 20 years. The Boomers are just about gone. The Medicare pay out is going to go way down by default in 20 years anyway.
We are fat, disgusting, toxic people in the US. Until the powers that be admit that and put forth an actual effort to change the mindset it doesn't matter what anyone does. We won't be able to pay the tab regardless. -
Lot of self hate here mosster.
Fat toxic people are great. Helps me get laid in comparison -

Right? If grandpa dies during his quintuple bypass they still charge you full price.PurpleJ said:Purp's dead grandma and her failed $450K operation approve of this thread.
If you hire a guy to install a fountain in your yard you sure as hell don't pay full price when it doesn't pump water.
Of course you just sue the doctor for malpractice and his insurance settles for much more than grandpa was really worth. -

Doctors should work on a commission basis -patient signs an agreement whereby x% of their future earnings gets assigned to the surgeon/hospital.Mosster47 said:

They sure as fuck wouldn't be doing life-prolonging surgeries on some 80 year old.

Nothing really changes until there's a public option. It's the only effective counter-balance to wrestle power from Big Insurance. Of course, the power then goes to Big Government, but at least the profit motive is gone, and all you have to deal with is bureaucratic inertia, which the private sector health insurance companies already have plenty of.
