Jonathan Smith listed as candidate for Cal job

Smith would be a great hire for the Bears.
What a horribly written article. Kwiatkowski would test the theory that great coaches produce great coaches.
Umm this is a theory? It's been done a million times and coaches are a crapshoot. Sark, Kiffin, Lambright, Pinkel, Tormey, Helfrich, Mullen, Ash, Kirby Smart.. Another data point wouldn't tell shit. -
I was first and right.
-
That'll be interesting when he brings in Tedford to help with 'consulting' the offense.
-
His contract is up in June....still hasnt been extended....

Not going to happen but I won't be surprised if Smith wasn't a coach at UW next year.
-
Wilner also lists Babushka in his morning article. That's just about the only person whose name they're throwing around that would be an obvious downgrade from Sonny.

Dream team at this point would be Spav staying at OC and Kawasaki taking the rei(g)ns as HC. Chipster would be a huge hire but I don't see him staying more than three years; I want a program-builder who wants to be there long-term, not a mercenary. -
Can we start a fund drive to pay his buyout?
-
That is Smith. You want him.BearsWiin said:Wilner also lists Babushka in his morning article. That's just about the only person whose name they're throwing around that would be an obvious downgrade from Sonny.

The reality is Cal is Cal.
No head coach will get the program winning and stay.
Cal HC job is higher paying than San Jose State, but accomplishes the same thing. A stage for big time programs to recognize your talent.
Tedford realizes he was stupid for passing on big money opportunities and sticking with that shit show.
Pappy ain't comin' back. -
Cal athletic department has a revenue problem. I'd be very surprised if they go the big name route. I suspect somebody cheap like Smith fits well... the proverbial "catch lightning in a bottle"
-
Official HH reaction to this news:
-
Yea but they are in so much debt already what's a paying a coach 3-5 million a year opposed to 500k-1million? If the new lightning in a bottle coach sucks it's just going to cripple everything even more. Might as well make a run at Chip to build a winner and actually awl tickets again.AEB said:Cal athletic department has a revenue problem. I'd be very surprised if they go the big name route. Football is a tool of the patriarchy. Berkeley folks won't support that antiquated crap.

Tedford was paid very well, and he got a really nice extension after 2008 or 2009 that meant his buyout would be outrageously large if/when Cal decided to get rid of him. He was probably overpaid for what the team did any time after 2007, and anywhere that took football seriously and paid better than Cal would have fired him after 2010.topdawgnc said:The reality is Cal is Cal.

The man just burned out. His playbook got too large, the stress got to him, his health declined, and he got so predictable that even the OS(U) staff admitted that they knew what plays he was going to call. If anything, Cal was the best place for him because they would keep paying him big money on the basis of what he did for them 2002-2006, and not on the basis of what he was doing for them 2007-2012.
Cal has new facilities and a new stadium. It's a pretty good school in a pretty good location. All it needs is institutional support and capable leadership. AD Williams, for all his faults, seems to realize that football and basketball have to be successful in order to finance the stadium debt and pay for all the soccer/fieldhockey/handball/hackysack/tiddlywinks minor spurts programs. -
Maybe we really should put @TierbsHsotBoobs in charge.TierbsHsotBoobs said:I was first and right.

Cal is where smart people go to learn about eKonomics.
They get to use the AD as a case study in sound fiscal management -
What buyout? He is still on the tail end of his one year contract.2001400ex said:Can we start a fund drive to pay his buyout?

The funny thing is we all want the same thing, Smiff included. Come on AD H. Michael Williams, poach this young up and cummer.

ESPN is pawning off a story Chip Kelly is coming to Cal and willing to work for next to free because he's getting paid by the Eagles and 49ers

You have legit cause to be excited. You are a good poster and I am happy for you.BearsWiin said:

I am not sure Jimmy is ready for HC yet. I definitely think that he is ready for DC job. There is so much shit that goes along being a HC. I think Jimmy is to smart to rush into a HC jobwhlinder said:Fucking Bruce Feldman listed Lake as a candidate for Cal.

He's the QB guru responsible for Jack Brownig.
