Neuheisel and Mora: What went wrong?
Yet despite a lot of buzz when he was hired, Neuheisel was dumped even before the end of his fourth season at UCLA with a dismal 13-23 conference record.
Jim L. Mora, ex-Husky cult figure reportedly turned down at least one one opportunity to take over the program at his alma mater.
Now his career arc appears to be in a death spiral in Westwood, just 2-6 in his last eight conference games. In their fifth season under Mora, nobody would mistake the Bruins for a well-coached team.
Some would say these turn of events were inevitable -- that UCLA just cannot sustain success in football.
Yet Karl Dorrell (seriously), Bob Toledo (no kidding), Terry Donahue, Dick Vermeil, Pepper Rodgers and Tommy Prothro all did better than (or in Dorrell's case, as well as) Mora and Neuheisel in conference play as UCLA's coaches.
Curious what others who follow UW/Pac-12 football think happened?

Neu - great recruiter, not such a great coach. Good coach. Okay player development. Nowhere near the cult of personality to maintain discipline in a large market like la that kids need to produce a good football program.
Mora jr - less flamboyant, more tough personality but an okay coach. I think player development is okay to mediocre. Again, see comment above -

Mora's defense is fine. Mora's offense blows, which is part:
a) shite coaching on the OLine...Klemm can recruit but he can't coach, and nobody else on that staff knows how to coach OL. He should have figured that out a few years ago.
b) shite OCs...when you are downgrading from Mazzone to somebody you pulled off the street, you are doing something wrong.
c) shite balance in recruiting/positions. Our 4ths string walkon is better than Falafel...no reason in year 4 or whatever you end up at that position. And in year 4 note having a kicker is pretty much inexcusable.
d) shite overall philosophy. He hasn't matched up how he wants to play O with how he wants to play D...they aren't separate.
Mora is a pretty good example of a college coach needing to be more than just a football coach...he's got to be a manager of coaches and roster. He's got the football part down...he's failing miserably at the rest. Esp when you are working against a soft culture like UCLA's. -

They coach(ed) for a school where the players love the recruiting process but don't love football.

Van Winkle has one of the highest conversion % in UW history. He's not a future pro, but he's a hell of a lot better than the dreck UCLA kicked with yesterday.2001400ex said:
