UW rushing defense

Some of this I discount because Kwiatkowki has emphasized strong play on the back end of the defense, and not giving up big plays. The Huskies have excelled at keeping everything in front of the DBs. Also, UW has usually held teams underneath their average points per game, so clearly Pete's crew is doing something right.
Still, it's worth noting that our? two closest games (arizona and utah) were against teams that had a lot of success running against us. Something that I'm sure they're addressing.

I think fundamentally we try to minimize big plays. Our second objective is to shut down the run.
Then I think beyond that, we care about pressuring the QB, etc.
It's been very successful here on average because our interior DL has been really damn good (if not always spectacular).
Right now if we had two stud BUCK types (2 Kikaha's), we would be a lot better than with Psalm the Useless and Potatoes. Getting guys in those roles that are 250+ will take us from being really good, but a bit inconsistent, to being dominant.
The good news is that I see those players coming along and being good eventually. Our player development is spectacular on D and we've got the body types.
I am optimistic. And with what we have in the back end on the bench, I have no worries there either. -
When you say potatoes are you talking about Potoae or Potatoes OBrien?

Jaylen Johnson could've really helped here. He's having a fine year as a player getting his first sustained action, but he's not making an impact. Hopefully, he keeps developing...it'd take a lot of pressure off of the D for having to rely on our current DEs

JJ was better toward the end of last year. Surprised at how ineffective he's been thus far.AEB said:Jaylen Johnson could've really helped here. It's a pretty good formula. In fact, it is the exact same big picture philosophy that Saban's defense is based on: don't give them anything easy, force them to methodically march down the field--which they aren't going to do very fucking often.Dennis_DeYoung said:I think fundamentally we try to minimize big plays. It has worked great for the Husky defense, as it is the best in the country at limiting scoring through explosive passing plays and explosive plays overall.

I just got done watching the Utah game and we ran that idiotic 2 down D-lineman front for roughly half the snaps. Why would you take out Qualls or Vea to get another stand up end on the field? O'Brien is solid but unspectacular and Psalm can go die in a fire.... not sure what's so appealing about taking a stud D-lineman off the field for one of those two fucks especially when you are playing a team with a RB that is gashing you up the middle all fucking day and a QB who is doing everything in his power to throw the ball to our DBs.
-
I just watched parts of the game and during Utah's first or second possession, they faced 3rd & 9. Troy takes off running despite P-Salm being there as a spy and by spy I mean someone who lunges in the general direction and area of where the QB was standing.ToddTurnerLIVES said:I just got done watching the Utah game and we ran that idiotic 2 down d-lineman front for roughly half the snaps. Seems to me our D is built to defend against spread offenses. It's hard...doing both at the same time.
-
I'm probably gonna commit doogish blasphemy, but I think we're beating teams on average something like 48-16. The 91 team was 41-9. I don't really care how much teams run for if we? Keep them from scoring.
-
With three huge DL and Victor in the middle, I don't get why we are somewhat soft up front against the run. Not all of Utah's runs were to the edges.
-
At any level of football, shutting down the run is the first priority. Making teams one dimensional is ideal. It's not quite as true against the air raid but it still is.CuntWaffle said:College football is a passing game

I agree the good teams are run first hit you over the top. However most coaches are bad and seem to try and hit the home run play all the time. The run defense against Utah was weird since they are one of the few teams who like to establish the run. I didn't understand why we didn't try and make Troy beat us. Then again im just an armchair defensive coordinator with a boner in my sweatpants.RoadDawg55 said:

Psalm is like a Stratego spy: Occasionally (rarely) kills the Field Marshall but is usually destroyed by the rest of the opponent's pieces, including a first striking Field Marshall.

Looking at the the PAC12 teams UW has played, UW's D is keeping everyone at or below their season scoring average with the exception of one team, Arizona. Dick Rod's team has averaged 24 ppg this season and if you look at their results, we? were a highwater mark in losses as they've scored fewer points each week since playing UW.Alexis said:I'm probably gonna commit doogish blasphemy, but I think we're beating teams on average something like 48-16.
