Why is Trump denying that he said not paying taxes makes him smart in the debate?

We all saw him say it, and an hour later, he denies he said it? It is all over the interweb.
So which is it? Does he think it makes him smart? Or not?

He totally doesn't pay any taxes. Should be a major scandal, but won't because the media doesn't ask the hard questions.

So here's the hilarious thing. I was listening to Glenn Beck this morning (yes my first mistake). He is not a supporter of Trump but of course hates Hillary.
So he did have a good point tho. He was saying that part of what makes Trump different is he is using things traditionally thought of as disqualifying traits to a politician, as positives. He paid zero taxes, that makes him a genius. Instead of bankruptcy being bad, it's a positive because he knows how to use the rules to his advantage.
Well that was a thought until right after the debate he doesn't realize he agreed he didn't pay any taxes. -
