A dreadful performance against Oregon and the awful game day experience at Husky Stadium have Derek, Kyle and Mike a bit cranky on this show.

Thank you Derek for addressing my questions.
Guess the short summary is the Huskies have
been Mariner-ized. The solution to shitty baseball
and shitty football is distract the customer with
ridiculous diversions to what is happening on the
    field.

    Great podcast. Couple of thoughts....

    1. Offensive Identity - I've thought for a while that this was overrated. But the podcast got me thinking about the impact of no identity and personnel groups. Offensively, we seem to consistently have large-scale substitutions throughout the game. I think this is partly due to the lack of an identity. And it fucking killed us on our last meaningful drive from a clock management perspective. And the slowness of getting plays signaled in is another byproduct. At the end of the day, Smith needs to go away.

    2. Game Day Experience - I have not been to a game at Husky Stadium in nearly 20 years. But in my time at UW (7 years), I went to every single home game, and not once was I not in my seat at least 30 minutes prior to kickoff. And I never left at halftime. To hear how much it's changed makes me shake and want to vomit. But when hipsters are dictating what happens on game day, it's not really surprising. WiFi is what's really important.

The comment about the band emulating the Stanford band was spot on. WGAF if they get in trouble being a bit politically incorrect. It's entertaining as hell and maybe, just maybe, they can keep butts in seats through halftime.

I'm old enough to remember the old days with Bill Bissell leading the band. They were often politically incorrect. We looked forward to them performing.

    Good podcast tonight.

Here is what I remember from the
    game experience besides the shitty
football. Sure I missed a few.

Car races on the Jumbotron to win
    a gas card-Mariner ripoff
    Throwing a football through holes
in a board to win money-Puyallup
    fair stuff
    Introduction of new UW President-
she looks like the type that hates football
    Sustainability Award presentation-I really
    didn't care
5000-10000 people in the Zone 8-9
    minutes into the 3rd quarter-WTF?
EVERY 3rd down on defense some retard
feels the need to artificially inseminate
the crowd with his bellow of 3RD DOWN!
like he doesn't think we know it's an important
play-I wanted to throat punch the guy every time

Constant Jumbotron videos that have nothing to
do with football, I think Rocky and Star Wars shit-
maybe they put those up for Softy, I don't know
    but I hate them.

GREAT new stadium. Haven't sat in a bad seat
yet. Everything else can be flushed along with
the people who came up with it.

Forgot the seizure-inducing video ribbon and the shitty hip hop instead of the band, but good list otherwise.

How self absorbed do you have to be to think football fans care to see you presented with an environmental sustainability award? It's incredible if you think about it.

especially when half the fans are tossing their Husky Dog wrappers on the ground and leaving tailgate trash allover the place. Great "know your audience" as always. Fucking humblebrag leaders who just think any crowd is a great opportunity for them to get in front of it.

Went to this game, 1st one in awhile. I contacted the athletic Dept. after the reopening game and asked why they no longer show defensive stats @ games, which they could easily do on one of the new electronic boards. They said they'd fix it. They lied, still no defensive stats board @ Husky Stadium over two years later. The whole program is a joke and I no longer care. Husky Football is DEAD.

Apparently you didn't get the memo from Upper Campus that the only reason they HAVEN'T nuked the football program yet is because it will draw 50-70k people 6x annually for them to parade in front of with their awards that no one has ever heard of and that no one gives a flying fuck about.

    1. I don't know. We have run the hurry up no huddle offense a few times the last couple years. It is definitely there in our play book. For some reason we just didn't go to it last Saturday.

    2. I haven't been to Husky stadium in a while but how about just selling booze directly from the normal concession stands? Some ppl say its forbidden by NCAA rules but then how do you explain the zone or the VIP ppl gettint it?
Also for half time show, even though idgaf about it, if you think it matters to keep people involved, just bring a group of slutty dancers or cheerleaders and people will be happy with it. It's not rocket science.

The amount of self congratulation that UW administerso do during timeouts at football games is nauseating. I've never seen anything like it anywhere else.

Boo that shit. Nobody wants to watch them jerk off. My environment? My immediate surroundings happen to be vomit covered bleachers (urinals with ducks) filled with fanatics that paid a good price to support a Football program. Sustain that program before you create a new program that you give up on (forget about) because "squirrel".

Let the band loose! You want to keep people engaged, keep the spectators guessing on when the next goat sacrifice #tequila might be.

    And tits.

Why did they move the students?

Regarding WiFi at the stadium ...

I actually tried to connect to the wireless at the stadium as I've recently been to places around the country where you could actually do that without being a major donor (Texas A&M that was one of their priorities during their renovation) ... upon finding the WiFi hotspot and trying to connect during the game, it then asked me for a password making me realize that the only people that could connect during the game were the Butler Cabin establishment.

So, for an Athletic Department that has sent out a survey to me in the last month trumpeting how great their GameDay experience is and trying to get me excited about the food, wireless, etc. in the stadium ... your wireless is shit. Not only does my phone not pick it up when on 4G, but you don't have a free public WiFi hotspot set up for ALL fans during the game but only for those that drop the most money.

But then again, how is the Athletic Department more out of touch with the GameDay experience than they already are.

Kyle made some great points during the pod about highlight packages, etc. that used to be played during timeouts.

One thing that would be way more interesting during the game than some of the BS attributes that they do is to actually recognize the people that are at the games. Given that you had guys like ASJ, Kikaha, and Shaq on the sidelines for this game, putting a small highlight package together for them and putting a camera on them during the game is a no brainer.

Also a no brainer is raising up the board so that those that are sitting in the lower bowl can actually see it.

@MikeMonan : Hilarious. 100% agree about the "new" Husky Stadium, couldn't have said it better. I've been bitching about the current pathetic GO HUSKIES! chant since they moved the student section; they cannot figure out how to do the chant anymore, and I'm afraid it will eventually go the way of the dodo bird, just like everything else Husky Football. Moving the student section was the single worst thing that came out of getting the stadium renovated. That move completely changed the dynamic of Husky Stadium.

In recent years I haven't gone to many road games. But I've been to virtually every stadium in the conference and nobody does it as frequently as UW does.

The PAC as a whole is full of a wine and cheese crowd. If you want to get engagement, the AD needs to branch out and start thinking about what stadiums in other places of the country do.

Of course, winning goes a long way. But often, it's more than that. Figure out what people want and cater to them. At a football game, I guarantee nobody gives a shit about an environmental award.
