Because they are paid about 3/4 of their contractual salary they earned during the non-summer months. They do this for tax reasons and so that teachers are gEttinger part oF their saLary in the months they arent on contract. They could just as easily give their entire salary as a lump sum in january. That wouldn't mean they are working for free the other 11 months. They could also only pay teachers the 9 months they work. It would be the EXACT SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY. Look, I'm not gonna do this anymore. Teachers are not paid for time they are sitting on their ass unless they take a "paid leave day". If you divide $9 / 12 months, you get the teachers monthly pay

Being a teacher is, at least partially, a lifestyle choice. It's rare to find a job where you can get 3 months off plus all the generous holidays (1 week in the spring, 2 weeks during Christmas, most Federal holidays, etc etc) while also having job protection based off on first in, last out.
But why are there teacher's unions anyway? They say it's all about the kids but unions inherently exist to extract as much money and as many benefits / concessions possible from the people paying the bills, aka taxpayers.
Frankly I think public sector unions are unethical and unjust because they conspire with politicians to hose taxpayers for their own benefit. I agree. If I could opt out of the union, I would. Most teachers do not like their unions but they are required to belong to them (and pay them a rediculous amount of money). The above exchange is a perfect t example of why I will never say teachers are underpaid. The compensation is just fine for working 9 months out of the year. The bottom line that really matters is what is the TOTAL annual cost of a teacher to tax payers? Salary, benefits, pension, employment taxes, training, overhead, ..... etc. That number would piss off most tax payers. -
If 'most' teachers wanted out of the union, there would be no union.
