Another bad QB costing coordinators their jobs - and in some ways, relevant to the discussion that many are having on Jonathan Smith.
Having seen Knight play in person this year, he was bad ... although a MASSIVE improvement over Cyler Miles. He struggled with progressions as well accuracy. At times, it made the Oklahoma offense very easy to defend because you would almost dare Knight to throw the ball. Against TCU, he managed to hit 2-3 deep throws (at least 1 was a ridiculous catch by the WR) that accounted for almost all of Oklahoma's offense.
I know that we talk about different things that OC's can do to make things a little better offensively in bad situations. But the reality is that the QB is the most important position on the football field. If you are getting poor play at that position, it's almost impossible to have anything more than an average offense.

I didn't look at the author of the post and thought it was someone normal. Then I got to the line
"Against TCU"
and immediately knew it was Tequilla.

On a serious note, I wonder if Petersen will give Smith one more year to turn things around. I'm sure Petersen will be with Smith this off-season redesigning the offense, and coaching him up on how to be a better play-caller and how to coach up the QBs. The one thing I like about Petersen is that he's there to coach up the coaches. Petersen has been with Smith for 3 seasons now with this being his first as an OC. If Petersen thought Smith would be a good OC after 2 years as a QB coach in Boise, then this is his season to prove it, and he will work his ass off to prove that he was right about hiring Smith last year. -
Smith gets another year ... no reason to really debate this IMO

If Petersen truly feels like Smith had a subpar year and badly needs help to get much better, then it was a terrible and short-sighted hire given the resources at UW
If... -
I think Petersen needs help with the offense. Couldn't run. Couldn't pass. Wrs weren't getting open Didn't do one thing well. Had zero identity. I don't think that smith is the guy to help him. Players are going to lose trust on that side of the ball fast next year if they look like that again in my opinion.

And if true, then it begs the question as to why Petersen made that decision in the first place.

May have thought that he had a chance to be a really good coordinator. He may still think that.DerekJohnson said:And if true, then it begs the question as to why Petersen made that decision in the first place.
It's easy to be a coordinator when everything is working easy and you can push button your calls.
It's not so easy when you have to learn how to make things work with a giant magnifying glass on you when you don't have the right pieces to make things work.
Not saying that Smith couldn't have been better this year ... not saying that Petersen made a good/bad hire ... just saying that clearly there were examples this year where Smith probably lacked some seasoning and it showed. -
The offense at Washington sucks.

How did Smith do as OC at Montana? This is a serious question. I really don't know and am too lazy to look it up.
And before the doogman-ish "Montana is not the Pac-12", Chip Kelly at Southern New Hampshire University says STFU -

11-3 in second year, scored a lot more but died somewhere in the playoffs and was sanctioned for something
