G5 is going to continue to get a spot in order to avoid congressional hearings and lawsuits. It is what it is.

Tulane beat USC in the Cotton Bowl 3 years ago. The G5 sucked this year but that's not a guarantee every year. The bottom end teams in the playoff suck anyway.

Instead of "nobody put a gun to your head to watch it", how about we actually discuss what is best for the sport?

G5 teams making the playoffs are not in the top ten things wrong with the sport.

    Maybe not even top 100.

I hope they go to 16 teams for the playoff, then just stay at 16. I don't want 32 teams. I don't like how the top 4 teams have a bye in the first round. They should all play the first round.
I could see a #16 having a chance at the NC with a bit of luck, tho rare.
UW could make the top 16 probably every other year in a decent stretch.

A super conference with 40-60 teams would end these weak teams from entering the playoffs. It's inevitable. Teams like USC, Texas, Georgia, Bama, Ohio State will likely go independent, in a super conference. They could probably make almost double of what they are currently making.

I think Ohio State wins the NC this year. The have the most depth to make it through 3 playoff games. + that loss against Indiana will have motivated them to perform better.

Unless they create a system that is more like a pro system - draft, get rid of the fucking transfer portal, salary caps etc, shrinking the playoff makes more sense, not expanding it, and it's only going to get worse. Right now Indiana is the only real contender that it's just private equity football and they might have a small window like UW did and then drop back down.

It should be the 12 best teams. Period. Fuck all the MW, Sun Belt, and MAC teams. Nobody cares.

The portal should be severely limited and you need to sit out a year. They let greed ruin the sport.

Huge Melon had a good point on the radio today. Think of the G5 round one games as scrimmages. Oregon and Ole Miss were the top-2 seeds in round 1 so they get the patsies.

There are years in the NFL playoffs where a division winner has a worse record than teams with markedly better records that miss a wildcard spot. It's annoying, and you can make an argument that the division winner should be left out because they had a worse record, but that's just the way the cookie crumbles.

Also, people probably will not have a leg to stand on complaining about this if the playoff is a 16-team field. You can't tell me that teams ranked #15 and #16 from power conferences will really have a strong argument about being in over G5 winners.

A #16 team will never win 4-straight playoff games in football where you need talent everywhere on the field AND depth. This is not shitty basketball where two guys get hot and you can upset someone.

In short, fuck the playoff for ruining college football, but if they aren't willing to go back to 4 teams - because there are never really more than 4 who can compete for a championship, year to year - they might as well expand to 16 so that the bottom end is diluted enough where nobody cares if it's a G5 team or the 6th place SEC team that gets in because neither will have any actual shot to win the whole thing.
