Wild finishes
Miami loses to the Ponies in OT. Cristobal at his finest. Playoffs likely over for the ibises.
Duke goes for 2, knocks off Dabo 46-45 in Little Death Valley. Game has passed him by.
Vanderbilt roars back at Texas, should have had the onside kick for a chance to win. Pavia isn't an objectively good passer, but he's a gamer.

Can we create a term like Coug It for Crisco with his uncanny ability to lose to outmanned mediocre teams close multiple times a year when those teams don't even do anything remarkable?
-
Florida just got screwed. That was a spectacular catch
-
I call it Late October and November.
Crisco has always rubbed me the wrong way.
Heโs โeverything thatโs wrong with college football.โ

Was very mystified why the announcers were so big on that not being a catch or at best they made the wrong call on the field and weren't willing to overturn it.

Not only didn't do anything remarkable, SMU had MINUS 2 yards rushing for the game.
I'll give him one thing, and one thing only, in this game and that is that they got a nuclear bad couple of calls on them: a strip sack that was called a forward pass that would have put them on the five yard line, and a PI deep down on a critical down and distance that was no called.
That said, Miami clearly had the advantage in personnel (except for Beck, who is a monumentally bad quarterback) but penalized themselves, especially along the O line, and made crucial mistakes at the worst possible times. You could not have tried to beat yourself any harder than they did.
I was worried about this game because I had some idea that SMU was better than they used to be but really it wasn't that at all. SMU is not a good team. Every thing that happened, save for Beck's pick in OT, was ultimately traceable to coaching.
Mario ain't it. Someone said somewhere else what he is: Ron Zook.

Nobody here is more bothered by Crisco than am I but explain why he's "everything wrong with college football,"??
What's wrong with him is that he can't coach worth a shit and has a unique knack for losing to middling teams.
But relative to the college football landscape today, he's not a bad guy.
-
Missed all those games because Disney and YouTube are have a dick measuring contest. Figure it all out and take my fucking money. Christ.
-
It's a play on that after Oregon beat UW in 2021 Mario was broadcast in the locker room saying UW was "everything that is wrong with college football," which really made no sense. The greatest player to play in the conference in the past 100 years was broadcasting it on IG live.
-
For the DeBoer can't recruit crowd. Would you prefer this?
-
As @WoolleyDoog mentioned above, it was a reference to what Mario himself said about UW.
-
Sort of amazing. IIRC, Hugh Millen spoke pretty highly of Crisco based upon his, and his sons, experience with him down I-5.
-
What don't you understand about needs more Tim?
-
I see. I had not heard about that.
-
Although Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal didnโt publicly snap back at Lakeโs comments during the week, he certainly shared his thoughts on Washington while speaking to his team in the locker room following the Ducksโ 26-16 win.
โThose fucking guys right there, they represent everything thatโs wrong with football,โ Cristobal said. โSo when you kick their ass, you let them know it.โ

One thing I've noticed is that the former refs who weigh in on plays with the announcing crew are almost always wrong. The only ones who are consistently right are Mike Pereira and Gene Steratore.
I've noticed that.

Well, in that context it doesn't seem like a big deal. All coaches talk shit about the other team in the locker room. If it offends the sensibilities, don't send anyone in there.
And in the context of Lake, it actually wasn't the worst take of all time.. I don't think Lake was everything that is wrong with college football but he wasn't exactly a bright light either. I always thought Lake was good at what he did on the way up but is a prime example of hitting your head hard against the Peter Principle.
And he was a shit talking goon from the land of shit talking goons. If he'd had more athletic ability, he'd have made a fine Miami Hurricane back in the day. Lake's an idiot and probably had it coming.
As to Millen's experience, I mean, sure. He's a fucking brilliant recruiter. Knows what to say to which people and how to say it. He's not dumb, he he has the hardware himself โฆ IDK, because he's not been in my living room trying to sweet talk me into signing with him, but the results throughout his career speak for themselves. He is really good at it so I'm not surprised Millen liked him.
I just wish he was a better coach.
Anyway, I hope Mario gets fired, but only after signing day.
-
I don't think anyone is offended.
You asked for the context I was originally referring to when making the fun jab at Crisco, so there ya' go ๐
Personally, I prefer coaches that are able to execute their job without that kind of verbal denigration of opponents. It's not actually motivating, nor effective, and you come off like a juvenile fuckhead if it gets out.
-
"I've always felt that being a Coug prepares you well for life. You learn not to expect too much." - Don James
-
lol!Where did he say that, anyhow?
Publicly?
Also, the quote is more true than the one from Crisco at least.
-
Yes, I want to say it was around 1983.
-
-
Great stuff โฆ makes me miss the really old eras.
-
I understand. It was just another way of saying, "yeah, that's par for the course". Especially in the context of a rivalry game.
I do, however, take exception to you describing Don James as a juvenile fuckhead.
-
Wait, what?
-
Obviously I was referring to Crisco.
The "if it gets out" part refers to his chicken shit "doing it in the locker room"!
DJ had the stones to say it publicly. ๐ -
I'm pretty sure Mario's rant in the locker room was also about how the year before UW couldn't play against Oregon but then claimed the North Division champ shit. Which, knowing Jimmy, I wouldn't be shocked if UW could have fielded a team but Jimmy thought just staying home and claiming North champs was a fucking win.
I wish nothing but the worst for Crisco. Fun to see him fail at Miami even with a massive slush fun and a joke of a conference.
-
No, in fact, it wasn't that obvious. You prefer coaches who just do their jobs without that kind of verbal denigration of opponents, except when they do it publicly, which makes a whole lot of sense.
Or is this mostly just a rule for coaches you already don't like because they coached at Oregon?
Take the L. It seems, as a man of principle, that you just prefer coaches that aren't like Don James and Mario Cristobal, each of whom have verbally denigrated their opponents. You have a right to your opinion. Be a man and stand behind it before your hurt your back.

I lived inside a 15 year relationship with an Oregon alum (and former athlete).
This whole topic is personal for me with Crisco & Oregon โ I'll leave it at that.
You're taking this all too seriously my friend.
