Do you think this just happens by accident?

We had some good history no doubt. It's just quite on the level of, say, 2012- 2024 Ohio State History.
If you look at the peak Don James run of, say, 1980- 92 we've got 3 x Top 5 finishes. Ohio State has 10 x top 5 finishes from 2012- 2024.
We were clearly the best program in the Pac 10 and able to play with anyone in the country in the Top 5 type season, but there were some mediocre seasons too and @RaceBannon had his finger on the button with DJ.
I think the difference through is the history being the agent of inertia as @creepycoug so eloquently put it. There's something in the DNA of The Ohio State University Institution and Fan Base that's missing in UW/Seattle. They can sustain success through coaching change and/or sanctions in a way that few programs can.

Don't know what this means?
-
yes, the state of WA has gone to shit. Too many PC ass hats running around looking for the next sign to pick up and be upset about. TITTT, I know, sorry.
-
your very best ever.
-
Ever or effort. Same diff. Thanks souwf!
-
oh, I guess effort makes more sense but I’m sticking with ever.
-
Don’t forget this fag being jealous of Coach James popularity, he set this whole thing in motion.
-
Huh?

Good point and articulates a perception I have whenever I get on the boards after a UW loss. You, Race, Knowledge, Snow and many others are pretty cold at assessing what is and isn't the case. Superfans who emote over these things - and there are a few in this thread - often go right to anointing the team as GOAT and it reeks of coping. That's the "it's right around the corner" crowd.
I have always found the Miami fanbase to be pretty stupid and for years myopically stuck in the past with a vocabulary of one word: swag. But even they seem to have gotten more realistic about who they really are in the last 5 to 10 years. Maybe I'm wrong but the 15th ass kicking at the hands of Clemson coupled with annual losses to Georgia Tech and/or UVa have done their work and at some point they seem to have become realistic. Gotta admit you have a problem before you can fix it.
UW has had some good things happen to it in the last decade - Petersen, Cornerback U and Penix and the 3-headed posse among them. More good things can still happen. To become Buck, though, requires a jump from where they are and what they have been since the early 90s. One year here and there they can be that but to become the annual monster Buck is requires a lot of shit to line up. Not sure I have the formula but I go back to what I think is an Iron Law: you need a little luck in the coaching hire.

"Your very best effort." IOW, good post, and it was. A sober take.
-
Gerb was a good university Pres though. I interacted with him a time or two as an undergrad. Classic academis egghead.
He had some alumni pressure about the football team that didn't get a lot of press. Back in the late 80s and early 90s the football team was causing some problems on campus and in the U District. I can recite some examples, but suffice it to say there were some rough dudes playing for Washington. Quietly, Gerbs was hearing from some big boosters of the school to deal with what was becoming a bit of a side show.
Just trying to keep it a little real here lest this place become fagman.com.

Everyone come look how smart and intellectual this guy's is!
You're on a sports team forum buddy
And this team has its own stadium unlike Floridian UCLA
-
Lol. I hurt your feelings. I'm sorry.
I'm not sure what was intellectual about that post but you might try not acting like a jealous 15-year old girl.
Most teams have their own stadiums. Hoping you're not hanging your wool hat on that particular distinction for your sake, but it was a good burn. You can wipe your tears now, super fan. I'll tell you just what you want to hear for the next few days, eh?
-
Please just only tell me what I want to hear after Jedd gets worked by this dead man walking coach trying to sell all his true freshman to save his job 😂
-
I'm just a pessimist, low expectations loser I suppose. I think it's really HARD for a school, city, region, etc, to escape the gravitational pull of historical inertia. UW has never been a true blue blood, but rather a very solid Tier II program (i.e., top 20 all time) who can occasionally play with the best when we get lucky with the right coach and other circumstances.
-
Dude Wisconsin is a very solid Tier II program. Wisconsin would never, ever get to a 4 team playoff and a title game.
-
I believe all of that. He's still Judas in that instead of reeling some of that in he instead took the football program out back and shot it.
Same as it ever was at Washington. Football success breeds academic resentment since we? ARE a tier 2 academus program.
-
Wisconsin isn’t anywhere near Washington’s league historically.
-
Whatever the tiers are UW and UW are not anywhere near the same league.
-
You're just making my point for me. Washington is not a Tier II program.
Right now as programs you have Alabama/OSU in a league of their own, then you have maybe Georgia/Michigan some distance behind them, then you have programs that made it to multiple final 4's or a strong showing in that realm which brings together a collection of teams that includes UW but does not include UW.
The blue blood thing is irresponsible, to me. A ton of teams that people consider a blue blood are simply Tier I or even Tier II in Nebraska's case.
-
Disagree. I think you’ve got about 10 true blue bloods. Then another 10 that can get close to blue blood periodically like UW. Then you have the Iowa and Wisconsin tier.
-
I do not subscribe to that criteria when you have an ND team that would have gotten run completely off the fucking rainbow by our 22 and 23 teams.
History is very important. Washington has such a great history that it will always be part of our identity. If Clooney can take time from banging to go make a movie then it's something. And it was a collection of people, not one guy sticking his cock into everything for fun.
-
Michigan and Wisconsin setting football back 50 years
Washington should have 10 wins before the season starts in this league
-
It could be argued that the Pac-12 still exists today if Gerbs didn't do what he did
-
Difference is Ohio State prioritizes football. UW allows it.
-
At least we? aren't a shitty basketball school that only sells out games to Iowa and Washington and gets their ass blown out in a single quarter in front of one.
-
I think that's fair. I think the Hubris of Gerbs was his naive belief that the Pac 10 was a conference of pals, all of which would of course put conference before self-interest. I believe he got sold down the river particularly by the Bay Area (funny - just flew in from there) schools and there was no excuse for that ignorance. Bill Walsh went public with his disdain over UW, which incidentally was identical to the disdain other programs and fans have whenever anyone is at the top of the hill. UW was top of the hill in the Pac and Gerbs didn't see the real agenda of the California schools.
Long story short, he put conference before school. Big mistake.
-
Yep. Though I'm not sure I'd put Michigan up where you have them. The natty run was the exception not the rule. Not in Buck's tier except they beat Buck more than most other teams but that's because of the rivalry. Coug beats us? too but that doesn't mean we're? the same. We? are not.
-
I think the blue blood thing is of limited utility. Like, when an Alabama or a Buck go a decade or more w/o winning anything of significance (which has happened) then who cares who is carved into some minor mountain in South Dakota?
America is about what you've done lately, what you're doing now. Losers sit around and pull on their cocks over what used to happen back before they were born. That's monarchy and that is anathema to the American spirit. You want to be on top? You gotta get on top and stay on top.
Some people have a weak spot for royalty. For example, I know a lot of non-Troojes who worship at the alter of USC. No many can really match their history as enshrined at Heritage Hall but it's not doing anything for Lincoln Riley's defense. It's a disease we all have to one degree or another.
Don't twist. If you were winning big over the last ten or 15 years, then of course it matters. But if it's much more before that and you haven't even knocked on the door since, how much time am I expected to devote to G'ingAF about that?
