PM to Fishpo31 | HCH Book Club - Baseball Edition
If anyone is a baseball guysm, they will love these two offerings. @Fishpo31
The first is my personal fav — where the author followed around arguably the greatest Scout of all-tim — Prophet of the Sandlots. He had over 50 players signed/drafted by him make the Big Show - out of the Ohio valley, no less. He famously signed HOF'r Mike Schmidt. Hard book to find.
The Second book was turned-on to me just recently and is very entertaining as well: Ball Four. This author wrote about his experience in the Bigs for a complete season. That year he started as a Seattle Pilot and finished a Houston Astro. Earlier in his career, he spend a few seasons as a starting pitcher on NYY World Series teams of the Marris, Mantle, Berra era …
I finished both offerings in under a week. Quick but entertaining reads.

Some of the best writing you'll ever read

I first read Ball Four when I was about 10 IIRC (checked it out at the library), and have re-read it damn near every winter since…have probably owned 6-8 copies in my lifetime. Upon entering college, and being around like-minded people, beaver shooting, pounding the Budweiser, and “Yeah, surrre” became staples of our dialogue, until this day.
I will definitely look up Prophet of the Sandlots, had not heard of it. Another good old school book on scouts is Dollar Sign on the Muscle by Kevin Kerrane. Good stuff!

I'm on a baseball kick recently. Thankfully not Hamilton!

Have you read Men at Work by George Will? Although now dated, it is one of the best baseball books I’ve read, as far as the nuts and bolts of the game, behind the scenes…

Ball Four was a annual read for me every spring as well. Then I switched to watching Major League every spring
Jim Bouton was the first to drop the dime on Mickey Mantle not being exactly America's boy scout

I will check it out!
Honesty can’t wait to he’s what you think of Prophet of the Sandlot and the scout’s thoughts on a simple tool for improving fundamentals and how to save baseball amongst our youth..
