In games that Elite DC Dan Lanning has faced teams with equal levels of talent his defenses at Oregon have kinda struggled.
2022-
Georgia 49 points
UW- 37 points
2023
UW- 36
UW- 34
2024
Ohio State- 31
Penn St- 37
Ohio State- 41
I didn’t count 2022 Oregon State 38 points, 2023 Texas Tech 30 points or 2024 Boise state 34 points because most good teams struggle with or lose to at least one team that’s clearly beneath them. His teams have a major talent edge on a weekly basis but when they don’t …

Who told you he is an elite DC?
ESPN and FOX. I did my own research.
Great post. Oregon's D has to drastically improve this season. I wish Dan would relegate Tosh to co-D-coordinator and bring in a heavy hitter DC.
Our? offense is going to have to be LSU 2019 caliber to win the natty as long as Tosh is DC
I respect you @flatus. You know what’s great about your program but you aren't a quook. You can be receptive to legitimate criticism and own the few shortcomings that can be pointed out. There aren’t many TBH.
When Dan was hired he was the current national championship defensive coordinator.
Media are lazy
Watching Penix torch him three times with little or no adjustment took the shine off of that
Hard to know much is on Dan vs defensive coaches. I'm hoping he'll insert himself more into running the D this season. Yeah I said insert.
I don’t buy that DL is not heavily involved with his defenses at Oregon. DeBoer was a great OC everywhere he’d been and his offenses as a HC have been equally great. Great against bad teams and really great against good teams. Weirdly enough his offenses play worse against the bad teams. He helps game plan the offense. He coaches the offensive coaches. Lannings defenses arent good against teams with talent. If he’s not helping game plan for those games then what’s he doing? I’d argue that Smart was heavily involved with Lannings Georgia defense. In the same vein I’m also worried that Walters best defenses were under Bulimia and Odom, two defensive coaches. His defenses as HC at Purdue were really, REALLY bad.
It’s always the head coach
At a minimum the HC is at fault for putting the defense in the hands of a grifter like Lupoi.
Oregon doesn't need multiple ace recruiters on staff. Talent acquisition is in the bag there, so to speak. The hangup is development.
Did you know Lanning though drove to like Pittsburgh or something to ask Todd Graham for a job though?
Did you know that Lanning has a tattoo representing every stop he's made on his coaching career? He's loved every step of the journey and they're cool to show off to teen bois at the pool.
Fish would try this but he decided he didn't have enough skin.
There's also another reason Fisch doesn't have tattoos.
