Oregon would have had much better chance to win national championship under new CFP rules

I mean, yeah, there are shitty draws. But if you can't beat who is in front of you one day, it stands to reason you're not going to beat them one or two games into the playoffs. You have to run into them eventually, and nobody else was going to beat the Bucks for the Ducks. Buck was the best team at year-end, regardless of what happened against Michigan. I'm not sure Oregon would have beaten Penn State twice if it had come down to that. Gabriel just was not impressive to me and was easy to defend. Oregon would have been a different team with a better guy under center. But that's who they went with.

I think you may be glossing over several downturns in offensive production with 3 and outs after 3 and outs. Tends to put the defense on its heels. Defense has shown up for Oregon. May not be a juggernaut yet, but they're more physical and better against the run than they've been in years. Just my observation.

Gabriel was too short, had numerous balls swatted at the LOS … plays that never even had a chance … and was streaky and prone to 3 and outs. It would have been different if they ran him more and made teams play them honest. But they were saving him for something and it didn't work. I think Gabriel was the main problem. Oregon isn't built to win games 17 - 3. Just not who they are.

he put up 45 against the best D Oregon played all year in a de facto road game and controlled the tempo from start to finish. I’m not going to fault him.

on the flip side, tosh made drew allar look like joe burrow.

you’re right in that Oregon’s defensive talent is better than it ever has been, especially on the DL. All the more frustrating that as a unit, they are very average.

Sure. Still get boat raced by Ohio State. And probably Texas. And they were lucky to beat Penn St. Top 5? team, okay. Contender? Nah. Maybe they beat ND, but as long as X-Box Tosh is the DC Oregon's ceiling is capped.

They gave up 34 to Boise, 31 and 41 to Ohio State, and 37 to Penn State. Those were the only offenses they played with a pulse. 36ppg is F tier.

I still have no idea whether to consider Penn State's 2024 offense good or not. It could not score a TD vs Ohio State. Like, it wasn't bad, it came through vs USC, Minnesota and Wisconsin when under the gun, but completely failed vs tOSU, underperformed vs ND and fell apart when it mattered vs Oregon. All 3 of those games featured end of game disasters.

Which does help make the point about Oregon's defense, in that PSU did way more against Oregon than it did vs tOSU and ND.

Some real sober stuff here. If you want I'll get some AA chip things for how many days you can go with reasonable poasts. Gabriel certainly wasn't Mariota or Nix but it wasn't like the teams winning games the playoffs had those QBs. Lan Man's defense still being a dumpster fire while being constantly called a genius is funny. My biggest pro about Lanning is that he's hired skilled OCs and let them do their thing and it's saved his possibly-tattooed ass.

He’s hired 2 really offensive coordinators but at the same time, is keeping Tosh.

I actually think keeping Tosh helps him. Lanning knows fans are stupid and will always want the coordinators fired before they want the head coach fired.

It's a good point. The Tosh recruiting stuff is bullshit now with NIL. I can't imagine he's a huge asset there. Especially when he also has to be a coordinator.
