He got kind of overplayed in the 80's. Seems like his songs were in every fucking movie and MTV played the shit out of his videos in that era. Kind of wore me out.
But his pre-MTV stuff is awesome. Old Time Rock N Roll is fine in small doses if the accompanying video shows Rebecca DeMornay up against the wall. If I never heard Shakedown again in my life, it would be too soon.
Agree. Up until the last 7-8 years, none of his stuff was “officially” streaming, by choice. When asked about it, he said (paraphrasing), “Ask my manager. That’s his deal. I play music”. He was one of a very few that I regret missing live.
Just got back from spending 3 days with my college roomie, bff, best man for both my weddings, etc. Three years retired, stage 4 esophageal cancer, using a walker, planted in his man cave. He put me on to the Kinks in 1980, and we saw them a couple years later at the coliseum.
We talked and listened to the music of our time, and bands we have seen together. When this song came on, I heard him say “Fuck it”, got up and grabbed the walker and went to the cabinet. He poured two glasses of Pappy Van Winkle, and I took them back to where we were sitting. I asked him if he was sure, and he said “If this is my last drink, let’s go out with a bang”. He played it 3 tims as we toasted and drank, to the good times…csb
