I never really liked Haener as a recruit or starting qb and I originally thought him leaving UW was sour grapes. Looking back it seems he legitimately beat out Eason but Coach Pete didn’t trust his eyes or he made promises to skinny or encouraged him to transfer back home because he had all the measurables to win the starting job. Haener is the definition of a try hard but he proved his moxie but If he is still in the nfl in 3 years I would be shocked.
I definitely think Haener got a raw deal here. He was a solid college QB, and probably a better option than Eason. Recruits like him can turn into good players with enough time and development, the problem is that kids don’t stick around long enough for that to happen anymore. We’re better off letting guys like that start off somewhere else and then poach them if they get good.
Had Heaner stayed he would have been UWs starting QB over Morris and Sirmon in 2020 and 2021 under John Donovan. He would not have sniffed the NFL. He made the correct choice.
Aside, UW makes the semi finals of CFB and subsequently recruits Heaner, Sirmon and Morris. Almost as bad or on par with the Williams, Lindquist, Miles haul.
It was really out of character for Pete to make that call, which tells me there was pressure. Pete always went with the guy who makes the accurate intermediate throw and knows the offense as well as the coaches etc. etc. Never got over Kellen Moore, and who can blame him?
Precisely the inverse of what happened between Price and the Swede, the latter of which had every physical spec you'd want in a QB. But Price was more accurate in practice and hit the intermediate stuff like clockwork. The Swede had more upside, especially as a running threat, but Pete went with comfort and predictability and didn't care what anyone else thought.
Eason over Haener was the opposite of that.
Still, I get it. Eason has/had literally generational arm talent.
Eason was one I was legit surprised didn't have a better career. One of the most legit arms I ever remember seeing and seemed accurate enough. I think he was partially a victim of the times 10-15 years ago he would have probably had a better career and been a high draft pick, but if you're not mobile these days you better be a generational passer like Penix. It also would have been interesting to see how his career would have played out had he just stayed at Georgia. I think everyone assumed Jake Fromm was the guy and he needed to leave but Fromm kind of seemed to regressed as his career went on.
if you think Pete and his offense would have done a better job with Haener I would disagree. Haener lost the job because he was a turnover machine in practice. He was cleansed by DeBoer at Fresno and made into a good qb. It was never happening here.
Eason was good when he had time, but OL couldn't pick up a blitz and when puka went out our wr's sucked. Haener wasn't balling out in that offense either. Not sure any qb was. Hell even brown socks looks better as a pro.

no smiegel 😐
Thanks Taft!
despite the part about lacking elite physical traits, I’m sold!!
Future Tom Brady type, minus the 12 rings and super model ex-wife. Don’t twist.
So basically, this kid is Jake Haener. Cool
if his mom is similar you can sign me up
That’s an excellent point.
Haener got to the NFL. So yes, very cool.
Despite what Pup claimed, I was first on Haener.
I can't ever remember UW getting a recruit from New Jersey.
I'd like UW to also have Smiegel for at least a season before he transfers to Ohio State.
Forgive me for not being excited about a 6’1” QB with no standout traits.
Feces you worthless cunt!

It's Chinteresting that Haener is the only one of them in the NFL and was the lowest rated out of all of them (the rest were 4 stars).

I still remember watching him in person as a sophomore in HS roughly 12 years ago. It was unreal watching a 15 year old throw the ball like he did.
Yeah, I watched one of their games too. Can't remember what year he was. But, yeah, the kid had an Elway-like arm and a great release.
