He seemed to embrace being a local guy playing for UW on social media so he seems cool. I feel like the vibe was in his recruitment that Deboer and staff really didn't want to recruit him but the narrative of the top guy in-state going to Oregon every year was getting so bad they had to sign him.

Every can't miss Seattle area player since Budda Baker has either not fully lived up to the hype at Ohio State or has been a complete bust and couldn't get on the field here.
Whatever you want to classify Conerly as down at Oregon is fine with me. He wasn't worth the supposed money nor should you promise anybody immediate playing time at left tackle/guard.

I know I'm a broken record about it but that's a good timeline for how long the top recruits in the state have been disappointments. Since Budda I would say Kyler Gordon is the only 4 or 5 star guy who truly met expectations or exceeded them.
JTT and Emeka ended up being good, but under exceeded their TBS rankings. Sounds like JTT might fall to the third round and Emeka seems like he's going to go in the second.
Conerly was fine. It's a draft which lacks top end tackles and teams are desperate for them and he still might not even go late first and is starting to get talked about as a guard, not a tackle. Vega Ioane ended up being the best instate OL in that class.

Another player that somehow moved way up on the Crootin’ boards for no reason after not playing a single WR with an FBS or a FCS college offer. I actually think this staff was really trying hard to get him involved but had to cut him loose

Getting into the first round in any fashion is quite an accomplishment. Both those guys were Top 10 players overall in their class and the top guys at their positions. Both are in really really shallow position groups for the draft this year in a year where a ton of teams need those positions and it's a really weak draft overall because a bunch of guys went last year.
Kyler was the 39th pick but the 107th guy in his class. He would have went higher but ran a slowish 40 for a CB. McGary and Budda both outperformed their star rating.
What I'm saying is, in the last 10 years, if you're from the state of Washington and you're a top end recruit, staying home has been played out better.

Do we count local guys who go play at football factories like Mater Dei’s Kodi Greene? Seems like more dudes have done that since Covid.

Got it and agree with your point. My only comment would be that's still a pretty small sample size since we're counting ~10 top end recruits over 10 years from WA. Budda, McGary (was he even a top end recruit?), Gordon, JTT, Emeka, Conerly, Huard, Smalls off the top of my head.

DTD fighting ghosts and becoming the new Bob. Conerly missed the chance to have a beyond generational experience at UW for some bag at Oregon and jerseys and now a lifelong connection to Eugene instead of your home/state city, and was underdeveloped. You never know what happens if you go a different path at life, but I know it's gonna keep you up at night for the rest of your career here.

Wasn't Gaskin 4*? He may not qualify as "top end talent" from in state, I would say if anything he over-performed his pedigree. I guess other programs weren't dying to get him so maybe that's why he doesn't qualify for this. Hot Take.

I think he was on 247, but not composite. There wasn't much fanfare around his commitment and I barely remember hearing about him in fall camp before he came out as a freshman and started tearing it up.

I thought he was too but that he was one of those 4* they used to refer to as Fetters 4*s. He wasn't big and wasn't a burner so he wasn't a TBS star.

My kid won some online contest or whatever and got Caleb's autographed game cleats. I have them down in the man cave. I can't decide now it they have spiked in value due to him leaving, or if they have cratered and I need to find another source of retirement income.
