I just went to Liverpool for the first time last weekend to see The Darkness at a record store (great rock band, great small venue gig), and afterwards we went to The Cavern Club and their house Beatles band was playing and it totally ruled. Didn't feel touristy or gimmicky, even though it was probably both. It was awesome. If you are a Beatles fan you need to make the pilgrimage to Liverpool. Schedule your visit around when the band is playing (lots of non-Beatles bands play there).
The Beatles broke up before they were 30 years old. We suck at life, oh well.
We were there in August, as they were prepping for International Beatles Week. I concur that it didn’t feel nearly as touristy as I thought it would. Mathews Street was busy, but there was a really mellow vibe. I got chills walking into The Cavern Club, kind of like walking into Yankee Stadium for the first time for me…
Yes - my favorite city in England. After the British Museum and the Portrait Museum (unless you see a show or something unique) there's nothing to see in London after you walk around for a day and see the sites on the Thames. Leeds, Manchester, and Birmingham are all pretty meh.
I was totally jacked about Liverpool across the board (we are talking about 30 hours, keep in mind, so I missed the large dodgy parts…). Downtown is awesome, Docks were awesome, X-mas markets were awesome, architecture is awesome. Even the World Museum was cool for an hour or so. If you like the Soccer, then you are on another plane of existence with Liverpool and Everton. It is the cultural capital. Magical Mystery Tour bus is actually super cool, from what I have heard.
We try to generally stay away from the tour group thing, but did the Magical Mystery Tour bus because we only had 2 days there. Would highly recommend, and get tickets well beforehand. Very knowledgeable guide, went to Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields, the lads homes growing up, and other significant sites…

I took my oldest kid to go watch the Oxford - Cambridge boat race at Putney Bridge in 2023. One of the more interesting London activities I’ve found.

Did anyone take the ferry cross the Mersey?
