All things being equal I'd rather have kept DeBoer
My understanding of the situation was that DeBoer was always looking for the next big thing
I am not a fan of having someone at the top of the program that doesn't want to be here … same with players on the roster
This year ripped off the band-aid of some of the rot from primarily the Lake era of recruiting and to a lesser extent DeBoer's recruiting
Perhaps the slide wouldn't have been as extreme this year had DeBoer stayed … the gaps whether this year or next or whatever likely still remained
I appreciate that Fisch is putting an emphasis on HS recruiting … it was the foundation of the Petersen era and it's how you build winners in college football
I never got the impression that DeBoer was interested in rolling up the sleeves to recruit … it's part of the Alabama appeal for him
I agree with a lot of what you are saying, but you are still giving Fisch too much rope.
I also think DeBoer didn't want to recruit hence Bama made too much sense for him, but there are many universes where DeBoer is still the coach because Saban didn't retire, Jen kept blowing him in his office, Dannen offered him 12 million after beating Oregon the first time, etc. etc.
But if DeBoer was still here, I guarantee we would be ALL in on the portal and shelling out big bucks for great players. DeBoer was a savant with the portal. Which was the point of this thread when I originally made it.
I'm not holding this roster over on Fisch … he had the shitty Spring portal season when what's available is primarily JAGs and he was left a poo poo platter of a roster. His #1 job this year to me was a strong recruiting class and by all accounts that looks like it is happening. My expectation for next year is somewhere between 8-10 wins depending on how the portal plays out … it's not like it's that hard to find my thoughts on what I think the expectations are heading into a season.
Sure, there were scenarios where DeBoer stayed but most of them required changes in events that actually occurred. As I've said on more than one instance, I had a conversation with someone inside the Athletic Department that would have had contact with the inner workings of the program during the 2nd half of last season. Based on the conversation that I had at the time, it was very clear to me that there was significant concern about keeping DeBoer. Up until St Nick announced his retirement, trying to find the out for DeBoer wasn't super obvious. Once the Bama job opened, it obviously moved very fast … kind of makes you think people knew something before it became public???
I've also said since the beginning of the portal world existing that anybody that is relying on the portal to build a team will at best build only temporary solutions. You're right that DeBoer would have leveraged the portal hard for 2024 (and had he stayed for 2025) and prioritized it to fill the gaps versus HS recruiting. Under DeBoer we would have been kicking this type of year down the road until a later date but that bill was coming.
Building up through HS recruiting and player development is the right long-term strategy.
The person is not blaming Coach Fisch for the team's struggles, especially considering the difficult spring portal season and the poor roster he inherited. Fisch's main focus this year has been strong recruiting, which seems to be progressing well. The expectation for next season is 8-10 wins, depending on how the portal unfolds. The discussion then shifts to DeBoer's departure, noting there were concerns about keeping him at the university, which became clearer once the Alabama job opened. Lastly, while the portal provides short-term fixes, the speaker believes the best long-term approach is focusing on high school recruiting and player development.

Eh some wiggle room there. Would our starters have been that level this year? I'm guessing most of the top 10 DTs in the MW are better than Bandes
How is James Madison looking?
I kid
They went 8-4 after cigarette raped them. That's not unimpressive
"better than bandes" is not a playoff formula
You're not building the core of your playoff team in the portal. Looking for Valdez type guys to rotate in isn't the end of the world
Yeah Penix wasn't the core of the team he was just some dude
I don’t know about you but I hope we get that Nigajuan.👌👌

Anywho, that ship sank a while ago.
Thank you. I couldn't pull the trigger. Also it's "dat".

How come I'm older than dirt yet I understand how the game has changed better than the kids
Park the Model T gramps and look around at how the winners are playing the game
Kids aren't sitting for 2 years to get developed or you develop them and they leave.
Oregon has churned and burned 4 stars to stay relevant year in and year out
This is the NFL now and it stands for not for long if a coach doesn't win now. The good ones always have. The bad ones need more time
We do have our own real world lab here
Hell no. There's zero reason to segregate recruiting talk from whatever this bored is.
Young whipper-snappers are stuck in the 90's; still haven't recovered from the shock of BLDG 7 falling unexpectedly.
Huh?
yay!!
